Tell me, what is Matri's main job?
We all know what a striker's main job is, but just by using the phrase "main job", you acknowledge that a striker can be called upon to do other tasks as well. There are no real, natural born goalscorers in this team, so the thing we must do is utilize what we've got in the best possible way. I am praising Matri's positioning and off the ball movements, and he deserves praise for it. If you wanna keep a discussion just about goals scored, then it's obvious that Matri will be the end of a lot of criticism. I also think you just confirmed that you in fact don't notice the parts of Matri's game I was highlighting, so perhaps you should pay a little more attention to his play. Who knows, you might grow to like him ;)

I can't really be arsed discussing this topic with people who don't even pay attention to his positioning and off the ball movements. There are some of us here who notice every time he takes the defenders for a ride and creates space for himself or other Juve players, and there are some who don't. I can live with that. His finishing isn't the best, I'm not saying it is, and it's even worse now that he's lacking in confidence, but this player contributes to our play in a way that none of our other strikers do. Our midfield has an easier task with Matri on the field than when he's not on it. It's not just about "holding up the ball", and no, Bendtner's positioning is not as good as Matri's.

His off the ball movement is fantastic and he isnt a static striker at all. Just needs the goals, our team always performs better when he's on. Simple as that.

:agree:

And whoever compares him to Amauri has no idea what he's talking about, Amauri was everywhere but where he should have been.

I liked him last year when he scored, just like I liked Krasic in his first 6 months and Amauri in his.

I see a lot of similarities between the 3. Some strengths, but inherent weaknesses that doom them to failure.

Ergo, Quag...scores in just a few minutes of time and has done so a few times this season already. See the difference?

Gigi, for example, has other things he does well but if he can't keep the ball from going into his goal when called upon he isn't doing his job.

Amauri did a lot of things well too, it has been confirmed...lets bring him back. He just needs more time as well.

That's funny, because I see none. Different players, all three. Amauri never moved well in the box. He was your typical good finisher with good shooting and heading ability, but as soon as he became slower, he had nothing more to add to his game. Matri is a different kind of striker with a much better positioning sense. He gives the midfield more options and opens up spaces. Amauri was never good at that.

He has, but the ones who are praising Matri tonight are praising other aspects of his game than his goalscoring abilities. Oh, and by the way, Matri assisted that goal, and the replay shows that it was an intentional flick.

They're not as comparable as you suggest.

Amauri did "other things" well too, even if it wasn't what Matri did well tonight. Yet people bargained for more PT for Amauri when he didn't deserve it. Choose for yourself, its fine...I still think Matri is Amauri 2.0 without the update. Bring on the hate. :D

Besides his horrible one on one fuck up, I thought he had a good game. Lead the line well, dragged defenders all over the place, hit the crossbar from a header, got an assist.

We look more threatening with him on the field. I hope he starts (with Quag) against Pescara.

i would like to see that, Quags is a very unselfish player like matri. Vucinic and Gio are selfish players and we looked good even without vucinic today so im thinking that Vucinic might not be fully essential if the rest of the team is playing theire part in the game

This, some people just have no idea. Matri is obviously a player that needs consistent game time to get the goals in (as evidenced last season) but he is just what we need to lead the line, not a fricking midget.

The one on one chance was pretty inexcusable but aside from that he was mostly good.

That miss was a symptom of a player lacking confidence (and lacking game time) The Matri of 12 months ago would have buried that. He just needs a constant run of games, still our most positionally smart striker. I'm glad he got the 90 mins, kudos to Alessio/Conte for showing some faith in him.

And I really liked our forward play once Quags came on. We looked pretty threatening IMO.
