Milan net Gilardino at last! Monday 18 July, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alberto Gilardino is now officially a Milan player after he finally completed his transfer from Parma.

The Rossoneri have been linked with the striker for months and talks were only concluded late on Monday night.

"I’m finally a Milan player," Gilardino, 23, told the club’s website. "It’s taken some time to sort out but now I just have to pass a medical. I can’t wait to start training."

The two clubs had been in negotiations at Milan’s Via Turati headquarters all day, but a deal was expected to be reached after Gilardino himself arrived just before 9pm local time.

"Why did I choose Milan? They fascinate me and they are clearly the strongest club in European football," added the Azzurri star.

"There are some great players at this club. This is a fantastic stage for me where I will be given a chance to impress."

There is yet to be an official announcement over the figures involved but Parma are believed to have accepted a fee of around £18m.

Gilardino, who has put pen to paper on a five-year contract, is considered as one of Italy hottest strikers after netting 23 goals in each of his last two League campaigns.

Milan now have one of the most feared attacking line-ups in world football as Gila joins Andriy Shevchenko, Christian Vieri and Pippo Inzaghi

Milan on the offensive Tuesday 19 July, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milan chief Adriano Galliani believes his club now have the best attacking options in Italy following their capture of Alberto Gilardino.

The striker completed his move from Parma last night after the Tardini outfit finally accepted the club’s £17.2m offer.

"I think we have completed a major swoop," Galliani told Milan Channel. "Juventus have a great midfield but we have a great attack .

"Gilardino is one of the best young strikers in Europe and everybody knows how much we wanted him.

"I think what he has done in these last few years is more than sufficient, he now just needs to confirm himself at this level."

Although the San Siro giants had been linked with the player for some time, Milan had warned that they wanted the deal completed by Monday or they would look elsewhere for a forward.

"The turning point only came today (Monday) when Parma accepted our offer, the one everyone knows about," added Galliani.

"They realised that if they didn’t then we would have gone looking elsewhere for a striker.

"The player has been fantastic because he has demonstrated his desire for the Rossoneri shirt throughout all the discussions.

"He even made a significant financial sacrifice which allowed the deal to be completed.

"But we must also thank (owner) Silvio Berlusconi once again as he has dug deep into his pockets."

They are nothing cmpared to us.They have not support strikers and a team without support strikers needs support from the midfield in the attack.Their midfield attack more from the centre than from the flanks. What will they do against Vieira and Emerson?Their attackers will be alone waiting for the balls and our great defensive line will destroy them

Who are you talking about? Milan? Because if that is the case then you haven't seen Cafu ever and Serginho when he's on the field.

Serginho plays once in a blue moon and Cafu is getting old now, who knows how he will perform next year. At his age, one year makes a hell of a difference, refer to Montero.

This does not qualify to say that Milan do not play well on the flanks, because they were superb last year with this kind of attack.

They threw in Serginho in the CL final and he was pretty much frozen by Gerrard. If Milan deploys the same kind of tactics, I think camo and zebina can hold him off, (they froze zidane last year, so i suppose if u can do that to zidane u can do that to serginho).
Then theoretically, with emo and vieira and canna and thuram, (the great wall of turin), we should be able to contain gila, sheva and kaka.

Serginho has been the Milan supersub for some time now, he's always a threat down the flanks and not unlike Cafu.

Age wise Milan have a problem on their hands, who knows how they'll turn out this year but an overhaul is on the cards so why not start now.

He's no spring chicken either, but I guess in relative to Maldini it's a significant difference.

I do hope they aren't counting on him to replace their legendary captain though.

I think Jankulovski is to play on the left wing with Maldini staying in the center, I see no big role for the Dutch electricity pole next season.

Serginho was pretty much frozen? He gave at least 3 very good crosses.
