That's the answer I was looking for, Andy. :D

I flew to America a couple of weeks after 9/11 and couldn't help be amused at the enormous number of police wandering around with automatic weapons.

This was meant to make me feel safer, but:

1. Guns around me do not generally make me feel safe; and
2. How would people with guns have prevented 9/11?

It's very odd the things, often completely illogical, that make people feel safer.

Why is it that the US is going further than the rest of the world with this stuff?

What happens in Europe (passing through a metal detector and having hand luggage scanned) seems a perfectly reasonable level of security without being unduly intrusive.

You're asked to take off bulky footwear and clothing, but still won't be searched so long as you don't set off any alarms.
It's because the economy sucks and the government wants to seem as if it does something right.

In addition our population is too busy doing other things to actually do anything even if they know what's going on is wrong. Take for instance several groups that were sponsoring travel protests this week and nothing transpired.

Unfortunately we live in a nation where if you question the government and actually protest it's policies you're seen as some sort of "hippy" or subcultural goon. Which is completely ass backwards considering activism is the backbone of democracy.

When I was doing my Park Service/Firefighter thing I hung out with some National Forest Rangers station at Assassateague Island (a barrier Island without forests and famous for it's wild horse), each Ranger had a 10 gauge shot gun and a M4 in his vehicle all for Homeland Security after 911.

Nice use of the google Andy.
Yeah but this stuff doesn't matter anymore, obviously. Surprised Google hasn't banned it.

Guns wouldn't have prevented 9/11, unless people had them on board. That's the ironic thing.

The current state of America and the every increasing lack of reason would be a major concern to me if I lived there.

The John Stewart thing the other week, while far from perfect, was a good gesture.

Shame a huge chunk of the population no doubt believed whatever negative spin Glenn Beck & Co. no doubt put on it.

Wasn't Google the ones that had the secret military shit on Google Earth a while back? I think they'd be on our side.

Not that it matters as every American knows the Constitution forward and backward these days.

It wasn't such a great gesture. Most of the rally against insanity was in support of the current insanity.

That's what I sounded when I was 16-20 years old. If they keep fucking around they're gonna take me back to the old me.

Weren't you the one not too long ago making fun of activism and organizing?:D

I've heard Google are buddies with the NSA. But I'm not sure.

I find the chances of technical issue a far more concerning than the chance of being blown up by terrorists.

It amazed me how little coverage seemed to be given to the engine problems in some planes a few weeks ago.

I guess so long as the economy is struggling and companies' margins are tight,
there is the danger that corners will be cut when it comes to the maintainance and saftey of planes.
