From what I understand, this award pales in comparison to the Golden Ball, am I correct in that assesment?
Not anymore , this is the one they all wanna win, it used to be the gloden ball but now 50 players can win it

My biggest problem with this award is why Nt managers are the ones picked to choose as no way can it be possible that the manager of Azerbaijan for instance would be in a better position to pick a player than say Capello, Lippi, Ferguson, Wenger, Ranieri, Queiroz, Ancelotti etc

Golden ball is the best player in Europe which also means that the person who was voted best player in Europe is somehow better than the best player in the world which is Zidane but quite confusingly Zidane plays in Europe but is not the best player in Europe but he is somehow the best player in the world:D

   ..I had a good laugh :D..

first of all..the stupid Aleskerov..the coach of our national team (AZERBAIJAN) had a funny choice..but that was nothing compared to the Chinese Taipei coach :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

    also Korea DPR>.....mentioning Rivaldo's name :D

why to let them vote? if they know a hack about football!!!:fero::D

they have just a general perception about football and football players...that is it....and it does not change from year to year based on football players performance......:fero::fero::fero::fero::fero::fero:

Gattuso slams FIFA’s World Player of the Year award

ROME, Dec 18 (Reuters) - AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has attacked FIFA’s World Player of the Year award after Real Madrid’s Zinedine Zidane was voted the winner for the third time in six years.

Frenchman Zidane claimed the accolade on Monday despite his club’s indifferent 2002-03 season, in which the Spanish side were eliminated from the Champions League by Juventus.

“With all (due) respect to Zidane, who is without doubt one of the best players in the world, if I look at his season I think to myself: ’So what?’,” Gattuso was quoted as saying in Gazzetta dello Sport on Thursday.

“If the prize is going to be handed out solely on the basis of talent, then Diego Maradona should have won it every single year he was playing.”

The Italian international said Juventus playmaker Pavel Nedved and Milan defender Paolo Maldini had stronger claims to the prize.

Both were instrumental in their respective teams’ progress to the final of last season’s Champions League.

The FIFA Player of the Year award is based on the votes of 142 national team coaches.

Gattuso was also bemused by the decision of the coach of Caribbean islands Turks and Caicos to vote for him ahead of more illustrious names in Serie A.

“What do these coaches base their judgements on?” he asked.

“I went there once on holiday with Christian Vieri. Maybe this guy saw me having a kick around on the beach and liked what he saw.

“But does it seem possible to you that I got one vote and (Roma striker Francesco) Totti didn’t get any?

“These prizes don’t have credibility anymore. They have more to do with sponsors than real values and results on the pitch”.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And I can't believe he actually got a vote!!

I have to tell you, I really like Gattuso. Not so much for what he does on the pitch, but the man speaks his mind, and isn't afraid to tell it like it is.

    Let's see:

Maldini is an all time favorite in my heart
Kaka is one of my new favorite players
I have alot of respect for Gattuso...................

    Oh no...............................................
