Liverpool in for Zebina Tuesday 20 December, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Liverpool have taken on Milan in the race to sign Juventus’ Jonathan Zebina, by formally making an approach, according to reports in Italy.

The Reds have the second most frugal defence in the Premiership and recently set a club record of 11 consecutive matches without conceding a goal but, not content to rest on their laurels, the European champions have now swooped to acquire the right-back in January.

Zebina, who can play at both full-back and centre-back, is out of favour with the Bianconeri after a succession of injuries and a recent pay rise request that was considered to be excessive by Juve’s directors.

Milan were expecting to make a move for the player in January, perhaps in part exchange with Christian Abbiati – whose loan deal Juventus want to make permanent. However, Liverpool’s move will have surprised the Rossoneri.

The San Siro side have been linked with a number of players as they look to rebuild their creaking defence, including Hertha Berlin centre-back Josip Simunic, but Zebina’s versatility is said to be highly-valued by Carlo Ancelotti, who now faces a race to sign the experienced 27-year-old.

Sei milioni per Zebina dal Liverpool
23 12 2005

Liverpool wants zebina in january for 6 millions:shocked: I would say, grazie e arrivideci Jonathan

i want to see zambrotta in left because hi is best in there. but sagnol is really good idea but don`t you think a big club like juve must have at least two good options?

off course we should have 2 good options. but we have also chielini, who is better than zebina.
we would have this options:
--Sagnol-------Canavaro---Thuram(....)---Zambrotta

sagnol is needs a rest
--Zambrotta-------Canavaro---Thuram(....)---chielini

and if Zambrotta needs a rest then:
--Sagnol-------Canavaro---Thuram(....)---chielini

don´t forget that we have brindeli and pessoto, they could play in the worst case szenario, if the other are not availible :D

Actually a replacement for Thuram is more important, I don't think that he can be starter for another season. Don't forget he's almost 34!

I think Moggi will find a good defender, Barzagli from Palermo has been linked with juve for a while

I wouldn't like the Idea Jonathan leaving us.....
I think it's best that we sell Zebina. He had a pretty good first season here at Juve but has since been tormented by injuries and now he wants a wage increase. Willy Sagnol will be joining us in the summer and he is certainly an upgrade to Zebina. He's more reliable when it comes to defending and offers an attacking option as well. Sure, we could keep Zebina and allow him to remain as back-up to Sagnol, but to me that doesn't make sense.

We have a number of players who can do the job at right back and selling one of them so as to retain Jonathan's services would not be as profitable as accepting a bid from Milan or Liverpool for Zebina. We signed Zebina on a free transfer and are about to do the same with Sagnol so we are replacing Zebina with a better player for free and by selling Jonathan we make a healthy profit without sacrificing anything.

Sounds like a good piece of business to me.
