It's a great performance, but there was something missing there. You know, you see Pacino in Scarface..you dont see anything missing.De Niro nailed Raging Bull,Bale nailed American Psycho,Brando nailed Godfather,Depp nailed Jack Sparrow etc..but there was something missing in Norton in American History X.

Before everyone treats me like Zlatan and Norton like Del Piero..im not underating him as an actor. He's fantastic, but he doesnt seem to have the natural charisma to nail really powerful psychotic performances IMO.More than American History X,i think he nailed Fight Club..or even The Illusionist.
But he wasn't even supposed to play a psychotic villain in that movie. The whole power of his performance was that he pulled off coming over as an intelligent, likeable guy eventhough he was a neo-nazi who brutally executed a black guy. It's the nuanced and subtly changing personality that made it so great. The guys you mentioned just play the same kind of static role thoughout the whole movie, with which is nothing wrong of course, but it's a completely different thing. Norton's character had a lot more depth imo.

I don't get why people like Ed Norton. I don't find him very versatile. Even though he's played a number of very different roles, he doesn't really change much.
In American History X he doesn't convince me as a tough neo Nazi at all. I do like that movie though.
Probably because he wasn't a neo Nazi in half of that movie :shifty:

exactly

Norton in AHX, one of the best performances I've ever seen...
Obviously you've never seen Tom Hanks -- only the second actor to ever win back-to-back Oscars for "Best Actor" -- excel in his most convincing portrayal of a transvestite in the TV show "Bosom Buddies":

Exactly. Norton just isn't a tough guy. He can play the bad guy but only as the sly evil type, not the crazy psycho. I think American History X was so well written, especially for Ed Nortons role that interpretations of him as an actor are easily skewed after watching it. The movie was brilliant and when you're the main character in an excellently written and directed film you're probably more likely to look good.
That's not to say that the character Derek is purely a psycho, at times in the film he seems logical and benevolent which Ed Norton is able to do a great job at.
