:wth:

:wth: Dear God :rofl2:
you know, in the end, i don't even care who's the better player (for liverpool). As i said, pool-fans must know better. I just look at the objective statistics, and no one can deny them. Barry played pretty much double as much minutes as alonso, but alonso scored 2 goals, barry 9... alright, not that convincing? Assists (leading to goals): Barry 10, alonso 1.
I don't want to get into any discussions and i know that comparing these statistics is not how you find out who's the better player but still... In my opinion (it's MY own, you don't have to share), i think barry would do better at liverpool, because he can play wide also... That's it. I saw people desperately trying to squeeze alonso into their dream-formation, when TO ME, it seemed obvious that barry more on the left, leaving more room for mascherano was clearly the better choice. but hey, who am i telling this anyway... liverpool-fans must know whom they prefer

One variable you left out is team size and injury. It's pretty important to add in those instead of blindly searching out goal/assist statistics to prove your point.

Barry plays for Villa a team not in any competitions other than the domestic ones. Alonso plays for Liverpool a team involved in Champions League play as well as domestic competition. At Villa Barry is the main threat in the midfield, the ball goes to him constantly and he is forced to be his team's playmaker, which has been seen with mixed results. He has decent statistics but his team is mid table. At Liverpool he would see less of the ball so theoretically his stats would decrease.

Alonso on the other hand is victim of Rafa's rotation policy, high competition and a nagging metatarsal break. If you didn't know Alonso missed about four months in the middle of the season last year and had to play himself back into fitness. Barry was injury free and able to play in all of Villa's games, had Alonso stayed fit who know what would have happened because he was a starter until his injury. And he was injected into the line up as soon as he was fit.

Alonso has the ability to control the tempo of the match and put his team mates into positions to succeed. Barry has a great attitude and a lot of skill in the middle of the pitch. While he enjoys individual success, his teammates do not. At Liverpool Alonso plays either CM or DM, two positions he has played throughout his career. If Barry came to Liverpool he would play either LM or DM two positions he has played but not to the ability he can in CM. Bottom line Barry is a good player but he is not great, if he were he would be Steven Gerrard and his team would be in the top four. That said, Liverpool purchasing Barry would be like Juve purchasing Amauri, stupid. They don't need another central midfielder to waste himself on the wing, especially for 20 million.

to LetsBrushYourTeeth: I don't know what the f* you're talking about, because that was never my intention. contrary to you, i try to discuss on a subject; guess what: that's what forums are for actually...

and enron just explained it very well. Spot on for the good post. And as i said, a liverpool fan will know better, and i never said that liverpool are doing the wrong thing or so.

Just one more thing; you said that it's not right to compare based on stats, because they're playing in different teams and you're right there, but you have to consider also that it's FAR more difficult to make an assist in villa, compared to the strikers you could serve in liverpool. And another thing; barry is indeed the star of villa, but the opponents know that as well, and i wouldn't be surprised if barry gets that extra attention in defense which would make his statistics look even better.

But i'll take your work for it, and i'll believe you that alonso is the better choice for pool. :)

Milan In For Alonso?

Another name has been added to the list of suitors for Xabi Alonso, as AC Milan have now been linked with the Liverpool midfielder...

Alonso's future has been up in the air all summer long, as the Reds' pursuit of Gareth Barry was expected to signal the end of the Spaniard's stay at Anfield.

Indeed, the Basque playmaker seemed certain to make the switch to Juventus before joining up with la Seleccion for their successful EURO 2008 campaign, but that move collapsed after the clubs failed to agree a fee.

And reports from England suggest that Juve's rivals, Milan, are now set to make a move for the 26-year-old.

The Rossoneri know Alonso's qualities all too well, having come up against the former Real Sociedad man in two Champions League finals.

Carlo Ancelotti's squad already boasts an abundance of midfield talent with the likes of Mathieu Flamini, Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo - the latter of whom is stylistically quite similar to Alonso.

Furthermore, the Merseyside club are now very unlikely to sell the crafty centre-man after calling off their pursuit of Barry, whose £18million price-tag proved too steep.

Hence, this link can perhaps be attributed to the fact Alonso is cup-tied after playing in Liverpool's Champions League qualifier against Standard Liege, thus diminishing his value in the eyes of Arsenal, Internazionale, et al.

Milan, however, are in the UEFA Cup, meaning the player would still be able to feature in European competition if he move to il Diavolo.

But the switch remains a very remote possibility, and the San Siro club would have to fork out at least £15million to land their man.

Yeah that won't happen. Especially now that it is quite apparent that Liverpool need help on the wings more than anything. As was seen against Standard.

The ONLY reason this rumour was made up on the spot is because Xabi being cup tied pretty much gurantees that other top teams, who are naturally most in CL, wont go for him. But Milan being the only real top team missing CL footie, is naturally in their sensationalist minds the perfect option to make up interest about.
