The team is above every individual... enough said
Supporting in football is about the team first, but if you only support a team for a presance of a player (which would make you a fan, rather than a supporter), his departure should signal the end of your interest in the team. Of course, some feeling for the club may have been built up for the club, and you might wind up following them long after the player is gone.

I'ma good case study, because I'm not a supporter of any team but my local one, but a fan of many.

I support UCD, because I live a 15 minute cycle from their ground, and go to college in the associated University (College Dublin).

I'm a fan of Man Utd, despite Irwin's departue, because I admire their spirit and style of play.

Conversely, I followed Inter's results when Robbie Keane played for them, but have long since stopped caring about them at all.

I used to watch Leeds play, but since showed my discust at O'Leary's sacking, Keane's sale, Harte's decline, Kelly's international retirement, and McPhail's failure to progress by turning away from them.

I'll keep an eye on Spur's results now for the sake of Keane, but not out of any feeling for the club, while I watch Chelsea with interest born out of more than Duff's presence.

Just wanna ask something, pardon me if it is stupid, but it is just my curiosity. Will you keep on supporting a club, eventhough a player (the one that makes you interested to the club), leaves?

Or do you really love the club because you are a fan of player in the club, instead of becoming a fananatic fan directly (No fav players involved in the beginning)?

I am a fan of Juve but somehow, but it all started due to Roby. Though I am stil suporting Juve but, am I a real fan of Juve?

Plzzz, someone enlightened me....
It happened to me some years ago...

I started to support juventus because i liked zidane so much (and still like).
I started to see juve games, just because zidane was there, and the team itself was not important to me at all. I just wanted to see him play.

When the Zidane deal with real was a reality, i really got furious..... i remember that those weeks were very difficult to me....because i didnt knew what to do. Continue supporting Juventus without my fav player...or support Zidane in a team that i really dont like!!.

A friend of mine (the one who entered juventus to me) stopped to support juventus, and strated to support real madrid. In some way it really bothered me because,,,i rememevr that days when we enjoyed the Serie A and juventus together,,,and always were blaming and saying the Serie A was the best.....suddenly he changed to real and la liga,,,just for zidane.

I found it very shamefull...and i didnt wanted to be like that..so i decided to saty with Juventus, although Zidane was at real.

Now i waish the best for him (Zidane) but the worst to real.
My friend , he dont like juve at all, and he desires the worst for them. We sometimes talk about that, and he always say the same "Now i realised that ill support the team where zidane is, thats all"

I cant be in that way.

i have a friend that loves pablo aimar and she supports valencia just because of him. so if he leaves and goes to another club i guess she'll support the other club

in my case though i support juventus as a club even if edgar davids leaves. i also have other favorite players that play in other clubs but i dont support those clubs

That's a goos question, I actually asked the same thing when I started on this forum. I started supporting Juve because of Dino Zoff, but when I played football, I didn't really support any teams and when I got back into supporting, it wasn't with Juve, but when Van der Sar came to Juve I came back and I've stayed despite his departure.

It doesn't really matter why you start supporting a club, but that if you really call yourself a supporter that you continue to support it. But, in my opinion that doesn't mean that you should always support a club no matter what. For instance, if a multi-billionaire came in and bought Juve and turned the club into Real Turin, I'd leave, because that's not the type of club that I want to be associated with or find satisfying to support, but I can't really see myself leaving just because a player would leave.

how about a reverse question...
would you stop supporting a team if a certain player joins it????
It came close with Ronaldinho and Barca, for me, but no, not unless it was Ronaldo, and then, only until he left.

but won't you be happy that he left Real Madrid to be a Barcelona's player? I guess that you dislike him becuase he plays for Real, but if he moves to Barca, he is no longer a real madrid's player!

I think I'd never leave the club because of a player, but I will be realy disappointed if a player like Bowyer for example joins it.
never move to Juve Bowyer!!! :fero:

Ronaldo would never go to Barca, he already played there, but back then he wasn't as much of an asshole as he is now. I don't hate Ronaldo because he plays for Madrid, I hate him because he is the exact opposite of the quallities that I value in a football player. I would not have been happy to have him on my team to play with and I think that he would ruin any team. Barthez is another like that, but no one thinks he's good anymore, so I don't worry about it.

I don't think he ruins every team he plays for.
he's been brilliant for Real Madrid so far.

he won't ever join Juve, but it could be ok if he does.
and you don't have to worry about Barthez because we have Buffon, and we don't need him

I liked Juventus when Paltini was there then went off them a bit after he left, then really started supporting them when Vialli came and in tandem with Baggio , I just loved them and since Maradona had left napoli, Juve were my only club in Italy. Funny as things have turned out but I did resent Dp in those days from taking baggio's place and was always disappointed when baggio was injured while Dp had to play

But I started to wonder when Vialli left whom should I support but after watching Juve dominate Man united with zz, Dp and Boksic running rings round them, I stayed put at Juve

I must say Juve;s success does help we foreigners from still loving Juventus even if my patience was tried during Ancelotti's era.

At this point in time I do treasure watching Dp and Buffon in the team with Davids and who knows which team would pick my fancy if Lippi does go again but I dont see beyond Juventus at this point in time

I personaly didnt shed a tear over Zidane
Me neither..

I might get a lot of stick for this, but I started supporting Juve because of Pippo Inzaghi. When he left, I was pretty annoyed, especially since the Juve site just had a tiny paragraph saying "Inzaghi to Milan"... :fero:

By the time he left, though, I'd already started supporting Juve as a team. Now, no matter who comes or goes, I'll continue to love the team....simple as that...
