Suddently everyone loves Del Piero now?, he did good, but hey its Del Piero, thats what we expect from him, not the first time he has scored for Italy, Forza Ale!!! ;)
Negative my man

Only the HATERS love Del Piero again, or at least enough to make you think they do. The real DP fans dont care how he does in a game, well still and always will love him. When he does good, which we always know he WILL if given a chance, we only shout and scream his names to show everyone else that he is still ticking and still has what it takes to start in both the Azzurris plans and for the Bianconeri. For they constantly need remarks like this in order to be silenced.

Moldavia-Italy 0-1: It’s Payback Time For Del Piero
9/9/2004 12:40:00 AM
Del Piero finally lives up to the expectations and puts Italy top of the group.
Six points were what Marcello Lippi wanted but it wasn’t at easy as it looks for the azzurri because only with a goal by Toni at the end of the match Italy managed to beat Norway and tonight Buffon saved Italy after Del Piero’s goal.

Lippi starts the match with an AC Milan midfield: Gattuso, Ambrosini, Pirlo with Diana from Sampdoria on the left. Del Piero makes his come back and his job is to give Gilardino a hand up front. Moldova never manage to worry the Italian defence in the first part of the game and the azzurri try to make the most of it but Diana wastes a good chance at the fourth minute and Del Piero hits the post with a nice cross by Pirlo. The home teams reacts and Kovalchuc doesn’t score only because Buffon manages to block the ball on the line. However Itlay are the best team on the pitch and Del Piero scores at the 32nd minute with a great shot from in the box. The azzurri could easily score two other goals but both Diana and Bonera fail to take their chances.

The second half begins and Buffon saves the day again blocking Lascencov’s free kick. Italy goes back to the usual style of football and the players manage to stop their opponents thanks to a great performance by Nesta and co. Lippi puts Oddo on for Ambrosini, Bonera moves to the left and Zambrotta moves up to the midfield. At the 80th minute it’s time for the Palermo hero Luca Toni that takes Gilardino’s place but there isn’t enough time for the striker to make an impact. The game ends when Dadu gets sent off for a stupid double yellow card. The azzurri take control of a match that is worth more than three points: Del Piero is back and kicking.

    Alex the Great returns
    Thursday 9 September, 2004

Alessandro Del Piero, Italy’s goalscoring hero last night, is confident he will have a successful season for both club and country.

The No 10 netted the winner in the World Cup qualifier against Moldova which he believes bodes well for the future.

"It was an important strike and I’ve been looking to score a crucial goal for some time," he stated.

"Everyone saw how happy I was and now I’m a lot more relaxed than in the past.

"All the signs are there to suggest that I will have a great season for the Azzurri and Juventus."

The attacker actually hadn’t scored for his country from open play since 11 June 2001, in a 2-0 win away to Finland.

Although the Azzurri didn’t overly impress on Wednesday evening, the most important factor was that they won.

"We needed another victory," he continued. "The players and the Coach were desperate for the three points.

"We should have finished off the game in the first half but it doesn’t matter now. We got the points and everyone is smiling."

Del Piero is now expected to be in action on Sunday when Juventus open the new season at Brescia.

However, it is unclear at this stage whether Alex will partner David Trezeguet or Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack.

    Moldova 0-1 Italy
    Azzurri Ratings: Buffon leads way
    Thursday 9 September, 2004

Buffon: Was rarely tested but made two outstanding saves to keep Moldova out and ensure his side the three points. 7/10

Bonera: Was selected ahead of Massimo Oddo and the Parma ace performed reasonably well. 6/10

Materazzi: The Inter stopper, in for the injured Fabio Cannavaro, looked very shaky yet again. His tackling was as ferocious as ever but some of his passes were amateurish. 5.5/10

Nesta: Widely regarded as the best defender in the world, Nesta underlined why again last night. Read the game as if he studied it the night before, he was simply class. 7/10

Zambrotta: Another fine performance from the left-back who gave it his all as usual. 6.5/10

Gattuso: The Milan warrior put in a typical Gattuso performance. He closed down, made challenges and almost scored – with a delicate chip of all things. 6.5/10

Ambrosini: Brought into the midfield by Lippi, Ambrosini struggled to leave his mark on the game. He made a few challenges but did little else. 5.5/10

Pirlo: Saw plenty of the ball but wasn’t able to really do anything with his vision. Fans are still waiting for his club form to emerge on the international stage. 6/10

Diana: A disappointing display from Diana who didn’t seem to contribute to the team effort. He also missed three clear chances to score. 5.5/10

Del Piero: He scored, he hit the post and tested the ‘keeper on numerous occasions. He looked dangerous in the box but a lot less threatening outside of it. 6.5/10

Gilardino: A better performance than his debut against Norway. Gilardino didn’t really have a scoring opportunity but he did OK and was key in the build up to Del Piero’s goal. 6/10

Oddo, Toni, Blasi: All three came on as second half substitutes. No vote

Coach Lippi: His side didn’t play as well as they did against Norway but a second successive victory is what counts. Did well to keep the faith with Gilardino but questions remain about his use of Diana on the right. 6.5/10

I just saw the highlights, good goal from Del Piero. Alot of composure was shown, and great placement on the shot.

We were far from impressive but these performances will be forgotten about in 2006 in Germany.

If Del Piero really wants to prove people wrong he has to deliver in the big games, not just against Moldova.

Indeed, but this is a start at least.
