I think the Euro folks have a hard time giving other continents credit. Just look at the posts here, it's not about Japan but instead Spain fixing the result.

Well, 4 won world cups in a row and in two of them the semifinals were all European, while in three of them the finals were all European. Of course South Americans are great and there is a lot of quality in some teams outside Europe and S. America, but the European arrogance is deserved for now. Sometimes costly, but deserved. It will take a completely non-European final to shut the European mouths.

Spain didn't lose on purpose.
Only after the Germans scored the third goal in the 85th minute, Spain stopped pushing. To Spain it didn't matter if they'll lose 2:1 or 3:1, so they could have easily continued with their attacks and go for the 1st place, but at that point they probably realized that finishing 2nd isn't that bad.
