There are some die-hard Arsenal fans, with a famous YouTube channnel, broadcasting from England's games in Russia. They seem very pleased that Harry Kane is scoring for their country. Rivalry postponed.
Meanwhile, there are Liverpool Blogs wishing the England captain nothing but failure - because he once scored a legitimate penalty against them, and was Salah's main competitor for the PL Golden Boot. I don't see this from any other PL teams' fans.

I think it was more a lack of other stories in the EPL. Plus Salah is a fairly likeable guy, unknown outside of Italy until this season. Kind of the shiny new toy and nothing else to play with effect.

Well, no. You're probably right there.

But the fanbase, and Liverpool does have a large one, have helped to propogate Salah's story in a way that is disproportionate to his achievements.
