To me its about whether Guarin can really play behind the strikers. If Conte sees him as an ideal player for that position, then I guess I am ok with it.

If on the hand, he is just a sub for Pogba, Marchisio etc then I think we are truly overkilling the central midfield area in the squad unless Marotta has already conceded the fact that we will lose Vidal or Pogba during the summer window.

Let us not forget that Vucinic's market value is still around 10m. That values Guarin at 15m.

Assuming he uses Guarin as the trequartista in a 4312, then I can see this happening in Europe:

Starting XI (4312): Buffon, Lichsteiner, Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Vidal, Pirlo, Pogba, Guarin, Tevez, Llorente.

Bench: Storari, Caceres, Ogbonna, Marchisio, Asamoah, Giovinco, Quagliarella

Inter fans are over-reacting in my opinion. Sure.. Guarin is more valuable than Vucinic but he has already fallen out of favor with the management and they are seriously lacking in attack. I think its a much better deal for us than for them but they are being too quick in judging thohir. He has not flexed his wallet at all so far and I think he will start spending in the summer. They could give the man a chance. If they were able to stomach moratti's management for this long then they should give the new guy a chance.

lets pretend for a moment his value is indeed 10 mil, which it isnt since no one is willing to pay it, do you think that value will be increase or decrease 6 months from now?
Vucinic's value is going down - no doubt. However, I doubt it would go down much between now and the summer. Of course I am guessing his value is around 10 (could be less), but his value could drop another couple of million euro at most between now and the summer - lets not forget he was first choice until Llorente got into his stride and he would have had a lot more playing time once the Europa league schedule takes its toll.

A lot of people are saying that Asamoah is now a full time wing back. Well that tells you everything. It tells you we have no quality subs for the wing back positions if Conte intends to persist with that system. If Conte decides to move to a back 4, no matter how you cut it we would need a DIFFERENT type of player - i.e an attacking midfielder of sorts (either winger on behind the strikers).

Remember, that if we DID move to a back 4 and played with 3 central mids we have: Pogba, Pirlo, Marchisio, Vidal, Asamoah and Padoin. UNLESS Guarin is used as an attacking midfielder, we would have 7 players for 3 spots. So if we persist with a 3 man defense, we have no quality subs for Lichsteiner and Asamoah but 6 quality subs for the 3 central mids.

I am quite frankly surprised that very few people realize this.

So to me its VERY simple: Either Conte sees Guarin as an attacking midfielder or the management has conceded that one of Marchisio, Pogba or Vidal will leave in the summer.

Let me also stress that in the 352 system - the wingbacks are the most STRESSED position as they have to cover the whole flank. Its much easier for Vidal to play every 3 games than it is for Lichsteiner given the ground he needs to cover.

we dont and cant have quality subs for every position, heck like you said we even had to go with asamoah at lwb, because the options available at our budget are just not good enough. The fact that guarin can play behind the strikers was definitely one of the selling points BUT i dont see us moving away from the 3-5-2, at least in serie A in which case asamoah stops being a sub and there are no quality subs for either pogba or vidal. you mentioned having 6 subs for the midfield spots, what did you mean?

if we are keeping the 3-5-2 then in the summer i would try for 2 offensive wingbacks that can also play as wingers... they dont have to be better that asa or licht, just a little bellow them should be enough so we can rotate our wbacks and even switch formations in-game... sadly, there are very few players available that fit this description...

OK, lets think this way:

Defence: Barzagli-Bonucci-Chiellini

Subs: Caceres & Ogbonna (quality players)

Central mid: Vidal-Pirlo-Pogba

Subs: Marchisio, Guarin, Asmamoah (if need be) - quality players in that role

Wing backs: Lichsteiner-Asamoah

Subs: Isla, Padoin, Peluso - below par players!!!!!

Forwards: Tevez-Llorente

Subs: Giovinco, Quagliarella (Perhaps average to above average)

If the 352 persists, then we need a quality wing back much more than another central mid - that much is clear.

for serie A we got on just fine with asamoah being out for almost a month last year, if you are talking in the summer then yes our team can use the quality upgrade. But as far as the vucinic situation, he was an expensive insurance policy and we floated him on the market with no concrete results so we just pounced on the first good opportunity we got

My opinion is that there are no other quality wingbacks out there. So if there is a problem of injuries that prevents playing 352, the second option (or first) should be a back 4 with attacking wingers/inside forwards, whatever the formation.

Chiellini will not be fielded as a LB, especially in Europe, from now on. Management need to put on their big boy pants and bring in a real LB/LWB alternative.
