Conte basically relied on Matri to hit Celtic on the break. Not many here would have done that and if Matri had put in a poor performance the result of the first leg would have been so much different.

It's ok that we were absorbing pressure but our counters were few and far between and just so happens that our conversion rate that game was like 100% which is a far cry from our usual conversion rate.

Things could have gone a lot differently in Scotland. I don't think we looked that good to be honest.

Most of Europe's top teams play either 4231 or 433. And I suspect for good reason.

352 is common in Italy but nowhere else. That is fine - I am ok with that. But having said that, I really would like us to have more tactical diversity for 2 key reasons:

1) Bayern and to some extent Celtic showed us what happens when an attacking team is really keen to press our back 3. That rarely happens in Serie A. So we need a plan B for those reasons.

2) Pirlo. Juve's formation is built around him. That is not healthy and we were lucky that for the most part he has not been injury prone over the last 2 seasons. However, given his age etc we NEED A PIRLOLESS type of formation. Forget about getting a vice-Pirlo - they don't really exist (Verratti excluded). Pirlo's inclusion means a 4231 or flat 4 midfield is out of the question. the 4231 with Vidal& Pogba behind Diamanti, Marchisio, and Jovetic is a good example of a Pirloless formation.

Based on what? Celtic had one good chance over 90 minutes, and the pandering from the media was all very condescending.

Celtic didn't even play to their strengths well, perhaps because Juventus and the referee didn't bend over to a home crowd booing.

I think they could have nicked a goal. The result could have been something like 1-1. They put in hundreds of crosses and had quite a deal of threatening shot opportunities that they squandered. Remember their CBs free header in the 6 yard box. I mean... we are acting like we dealt with everything very calmly but we did give up quite a bit of opportunities. More than usual. A couple free shots from the top of the box that I rarely saw in league play.

And also, I felt that we struggled with our offensive transition. Too many times we got squeezed out when trying to advance the ball into their final 3rd. I didn't like the link up between Pirlo who was being run at continuously and his outlets, mainly Vucinic. I think we were forced up the sidelines far too much and got cut off quite a few times. It wasn't a well executed gameplan but it was a decently sound gameplan if you know what I mean. It's not a bad choice usually to play like that on the road in the CL but I think we overdid the bunkering and our transition was really poor.

Like I said, Matri had a wonder game with his perfect movements, his goal and assist. And I understand the countering style, I really do, but we relied too much on our forwards when we know that's not our strong point.

I remember that header, from Ambrose, the good chance I referred to. The rest of the crosses were almost completely dealt with comfortably, and I disagree that there were quite a few opportunities given up. Practically all of them were chances that would have taken a lot of technique/ability to pull off, such as that shot from the edge of the area or a glancing header. Juve were mostly well represented in the penalty area, I think Juve should have dealt with Celtic by using the superior technical ability to their advantage but it worked enough.

Offensively, no doubt about Juve being shown up for their weaknesses in the knockout rounds. I think the forwards are the main reason why Juve have been terrible at counter attacks, and is one big factor in Juve looking very hopeless vs Bayern.

I don't think we'll know how many gears Juve had in Scotland because of that early goal, but it was really encouraging to see them play that efficiently. Style wise I don't think Juve did themselves justice over the knockout rounds, I think Conte has work to do on preventing Pirlo's suffocation being so critical to the team. I pretty much agree with you about the offensive gameplan really, especially the bunkering part.

The thing is, the 4-2-3-1 IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

We don't have the players to use that formation, nor we're being linked with players who could make it work, the only two strong rumours in this mercato are Higuaín and Jovetic. Thinking of use them on the wings is just ridiculous, specially on Higuain's case. Also we don't have a trequartista, we saw what happened with Marchisio against poor Serie A teams, he's not that kind of player, if we force the use of that system our results will be worse than what we've got with the 3-5-2 IMO.

The only change in formation that I think that we could do is maybe a 4-3-1-2, 3-4-3 or even 4-3-3 we don't have the wings to use it tho, unless a real winger comes insted of Higuaín we could think of make it work using Jovetic-Llorente-Winger. Conte has been inteligent enough to put our best players on the field adapting a system for us to be able to field them all, and that's the 3-5-2.

Like Dule, I hate to see our kids departing so soon. BUT, since Falji is here to stay, we HAVE to take advantage of that and deal with him. Fiorentina bought bunch of our players (Gulan, Nastasic, Ljajic, Jovetic), lot of them for small fee, and they will get, and for Nastasic already got, a lot of money. Pantic is very gifted player, our former SD said that he's one of the best talents - Ilic, Ciric, Mijatovic in one - that being said, very creative player with flawless technique. Let's get Partizan kids (since, you know, they will leave no matter what, probably to Viola) and get some 1st team prospects.

Marchisio as a trequartista, Chiellini as a LB, we won't have the depth that the 4-2-3-1 pursues. If we get an offensive LB then it could somehow work 'cause Lichsteiner is ideal as a defensive RB. I don't really se how Pepe could help us that much but it's ok I guess.

You know we still got over a month til the window opens and another month before it closes, right? There's plenty of time for surprises, bad or not.

With our budget I don't think that we could get all of the players that could make the 4-2-3-1 work. We would need a CAM, a LB and a proper RW at least, alongside with Jovetic.
