Marrone seems to have played better in central defense than in midfield when he has had the chance. Maybe he is going to be converted to that position even if he is loaned out.

You know, I have this gut feeling that if we have a bad season next year, its not going to be because of our attack but our defense.

Forwards win matches but Defense wins titles right? Well, Barzagli, Bonucci and Chiellini have all had 2 great seasons. Almost certainly one or perhaps 2 of them are either going to be out with a long term injury or be out of form.

Caceres may be the answer but I would dread the prospects of Peluso playing in a back 3 against Europe's best.

Some have mentioned Van Buyten on a bosman but I remember before we were to play Bayern, people were talking of him possibly being their only weakness.

We need to think smartly about a defensive back up. Someone who is dependable, able to adjust to a back 3 but would be ok with limited playing time if the first choice back three are injury free and in form.

Could be tricky.

"Juventus should aim to be like Bayern Munchen"

Next piece of news:

"Juventus set to sign Diamanti"

Here is a start, if you want to be like Bayern, they usually don't sign players like Diamanti.

Marotta has made some good signings but he is also made a lot of bad ones.

Krasic 15 (sold for a fraction), Elia 10m (sold for a fraction), Vucinic 18m, Matri 15m, Quagliarella 13-15m, Giovinco (sold 50% for 4m, bought 50% for 12m), Isla (9m for 50% - 18m for Isla is a big valuation.....you can now get Nani for that).

There is a lot more. The thing is......We probably spent >80m on attacking players with not one of them making a real difference. Aguero for 40m seemed like a lot (and probably still was) but HE definitely would have made a difference.

We have bought a lot of so called depth players. But we have a tendency to spend ~8m to 15m on these types of players. You buy a lot of them and it adds up. Conte doesn't exactly rotate the squad enough to justify spending that kind of money on such players.

For the money we wasted on average attackers, we could have brought in Aguero and Van Persie and used youth players as the squad players.

My fear is, we will sell Quags and Matri for less than 6m each or 12m for a combined acquisition cost of >30m.

For this transfer campaign, we don't need depth players. Peluso, Giaccherini, Padoin, Caceres etc are already there.

I don't mind him (Diamanti) but he better come cheap. If we spend more than EU4-5m on him, its another waste. Need to play hardball with them....Diamanti himself would dream of playing for Juve to win something in his career, no reason why we should have to pay anything close to market value for him - so Diamanti has to hussle his own club to join us.

If you want to be like Bayern, you have to move in the mercato like Bayern. That would mean, not just spending money, but spending it wisely. Something we clearly haven't done in the past. The resources are there, and yet we don't optimise them.

Diamanti isn't bad for the right price, he's very good. However, I'd believe that we can get Ilicic for the same transfer fee. Ilicic is younger, though, Diamanti could be more of a team player.

Diamanti is more versatile and would work well under Conte. It depends on the logistics of the deal, and the timing of it. Basically, even if we spend 7m here, that better not affe our future top quality purchase. Which is why this type of deal should happen at the end of the mercato, not at the start of it, when you have clear priorities.

This!

though these transfers are perfect IMO:

last 2 years:
Vidal: 12.500.000
Licht: 10.000.000
Pirlo: free transfer
Pogba: free transfer

if we have 2 of these transfers every summer we are on our way, but we tend to waste too much money on the diamanit's and giaccerini's.. for christ sake Diamanti is 30!

Bonera, Diamanti, Higuain, Nani/Jojo/Lulic/Kolarov/Ljajic. That last winger/wingback role is a wild card call. But how would you guys rate such a mercato? I'd give it a 7/10.

7, mostly because I feel like we are going to be ignoring the defense greatly, in pursuit of our top players up front. I feel like the d is going to have issues next season. We need quality depth there. And for me, I think it more important to get a quality LwB than a quality RW, as good as a Nani would look on paper. Though I'd be very happy wi that purchase.
