Chiellini is a better center back, but he does a good job when playing the left back position.
He does a good job, that's it, he doesn't excel in it like he does when used as a CB. And to be honest, he's awful when he has to attack.

Why would we want to break up our defense anyway? Our defenders have built up this amazing connection in the middle that most teams never even come close to and we're basically this good of a team because of our defense.

guys, I want to apologize first about my last posts... I wasn't in good mood... and that I'm not a good english speaker/writer, I can read and understand you fine but writing my own opinion isn't easy :D

let me try to present my opinion once again.

first, I'm convinced that we need not just one quality SS, we need two, perhaps not in the way of we need two quality SS but rather we need two quality attacking players that can offer more penetration through opposition defenses.

because I can't help but thinking that llorente will not find it easy in italy, and if we can draw comparison then we can see similarities between him and trezeguet/inzaghi, what do they have in common? that they are the type that demand services from other players, they cannot be expected to create.

now, in games that we dominate, llorente will often play with his back on the goal, he will be instructed to hold the ball and to allow his team mates to penetrate opposition defense, who will penetrate? mainly that shiny new SS, marchisio and vidal, as well as wings...

but as we have often seen, serie a teams defend deep, non serie a fans can call them park the bus more than epl, la liga, bundesliga teams... now we have all seen that against such situation, marchisio and vidal didn't offer much, our wingbacks also cannot do much, either they cannot penetrate or they cannot cross, add the fact that goals from headed cross are something very rarely seen in serie a; then the burden will fall to our shiny new SS, however it's a reasonable expectation to say that he alone won't be able to break the deadlock all the time.

in that case as we have seen before, the coach will be forced to sub either marchisio or vidal or one of the defenders with more attacking players, that is unless we are satisfied with drawing or losing; but then who will come from the bench? vucinic? giovinco? matri? next season anelkas boriellos bendtners of this world? pogba? marrone? padoin? isla? pepe?

you see, we do not have quality second option from our bench that can come and make a difference, especially in a deadlock situation in which we desperate to score goals despite having the majority of possession.

a 2nd quality attacking player can also allow us to be more varied in attacking gameplan, perhaps and I have no doubts about this, that there are times when flat 3-5-2 with regista style pirlo is much inferior to 3-4-1-2 with quality AMC (or trequartista or fantasista or #10 whatever, it doesn't have to be pure AMC player), quality SS and a quality target man; also there are times when a big slow target man like Llorente will perhaps not needed at all, we may be able just to sit back absorbing pressure and attacks and to blast through counterattacks with speedy and quality SS duo; and the time will come when our main SS will need to be rested, as you can see we cannot rely on vucinic, and giovinco, even if they stay they will likely be even worse than now due to mental pressure or frustration.

so you see, it's about adding tactical attacking asset to our squad.

now the question on does it worth losing someone like vidal? for me it's worth it.

a. asamoah, no matter the argument about his position on our squad RIGHT NOW, it cannot hide the fact that he was more of the CM type player; add the fact that he offer relatively little in attacking as an LWB just further push the reason why he should be used as CM, and I'm convinced that asamoah can be as solid as vidal in covering defense; and it's not that vidal have amazing long lasting consistency either.
b. there are plenty of peluso and padoin and pazienza in this world that we can acquire to 'close the hole' on our left flank or as a 4th CM player, especially if you compare to our dire need in quality attacking players.
c. about strengthening european rivals, let me ask you about the probability of us meeting a club we sell our player to? the chance is slim, and even if it strengthened them so what? there are several clubs that just as strong, if you are scared with such situation then you don't fit to compete with the best; and if it can result in us getting significantly better in attack then why not?

single quality SS is not enough, even if we get ronaldo it's not enough, we need another.

but lastly, if we have to lose vidal just to acquire ONE quality SS then I too will not agree with that move.

You are forgiven :D

Obviously, matters would be much easier if we had more money, and a higher turnover, but baby steps to getting back to the top are required. We are 2 World Class signings from being at the table with the big boys.
