Zizou, Alex, Ronaldo, Rivaldo > than the current generation, which obviously is a more evolved species athletically speaking. But tthe game today has changed. Speed plays a much bigger factor in today's game than it did earlier, and as result, you won't find too many people with the vision the guys of yore had.

Juve plan new Drogba bid
By Football Italia staff

Juventus are reportedly gearing up their third attempt to sign Didier Drogba in January, while Fernando Llorente also remains a target.

The Bianconeri failed to sign a 'top player’ for their attack over the summer, missing out on the likes of Robin Van Persie, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic, instead plumping for Nicklas Bendtner.

It was reported over the last few days that two different bids were made for the Shanghai Shenhua star, offering a two-year contract worth €5m per season.

France Football published what they claim is the written proposal from Juventus to former Chelsea star Drogba.

Now there are suggestions in Tuttosport that the proposal for the 34-year-old will be renewed in January.

Juve were also in advanced talks with Athletic Bilbao for Llorente, but the Spanish side refused to release the striker despite the fact his contract expires in June 2013.

The Bianconeri are expected to make another offer in January, though they face competition from Liverpool.

So no striker. Too bad.
I think we have a chance. If not in January then I think he's our new forward in the summer.

i still think were gonna get osvaldo and going on his early season form that actually wouldn't even be that bad of a scenario
Not gonna happen. They won't sell him, despite of him being a troublemaker from time to time. They (I think Zeman) said he has the best results in training and how he's their best player.

So does anyone else think the FI article claiming Jovetic is promised to Man City next season is a load of crap or am I the only one?

Who is Medau? :p

I humbly disagree. Football has lost its beauty and romanticism. It's like saying that Lebron is better than Jordan :howler:

Ronaldo and Messi are amazing talents no doubt. The fact that the gulf in class between them and everyone else is testament to their ability, but also a reminder that the overall general quality of the game has significantly declined.

Messi. I was posting from my phone :D

And again, I disagree. LeBron probably is better than Jordan in absolute terms. He's quicker, stronger and IMO he'd win vs Jordan in his prime 1on1. But thats true in every sport. Jordan was a beast in his time and is remembered as one of the best ever for that. Like Pele is not as good as today's top strikers like Messi or Ronaldo, because he lived in a different era when the sport was different.

Every generation builds on the experience of the previous one, sport is getting more and more professional and scientific, like everything in life. So it is only normal that newer genrations are better than previous ones.,

15 years ago people were probably saying that the new generation of Del Piero, Totti, Ronaldo, etc was not as good as the previous one of Platini, Cruyyf, van Basten etc. But your/our generation accepted plaers fom our youth as the best generation ever and now our generation is saying that the new one is worse.

That is a normal circle of life, but it is ultimately untrue. If you look at the overall quality of almost any sport now compared to 20 years ago, I can guarante that in 95% of the cases the overall quality is better now.

I disagree. Fitness and athleticism is a huge part of sport. I have amazing vision when playing foootball but no athleticism or technique :D

the technical skill would be different from say 10-20 years ago to now..... reasons being the players don't really smoke anymore, more sprint type training being implemented into clubs and strict skin fold testing making them fitter and faster players. But faster doesn't necessarily mean better it's just an added advantage. I am a semi pro athlete who plays afl in Australia. the main difference between the sport now days and say 20-30 years ago is there's more sprint training being involved, skin fold testing to make sure youre not carrying any extra fat resulting in a faster game then what it useto be, so the little things now days do make athletes better but doesn't mean their skill is any greater or tactics. This is probably why technical greats like pirlo and zidane despite playing against young fast players can still make them look like novices because their skills are just that good.

I agree that the lack of athleticism can be repalced by amazinjg skill, but those players are rare, and the question was about the general quality of players now compared to older times.

Let's put it this way:

If you put the first to last club in Serie A last season and played them against the first toe last club from 1990 (so 1st v 1st, 2nd v 2nd, etc) who do you think would win?

The overall quality is significantly better today than 20 yars ago. When you look at the overall quality don't look just at the top players, look at the bottom ones as well.

well i was born in 1992 but i am sure a peak team of baggio, henry, giggs, scholes, zidane, conte, maldini etc would be a hard match for todays starting 11 which would be like messi, ronaldo, alves, pique, buffon etc
