I know you're trying to hope your way into seeing Marchisio start, but just because Conte admitted it wasn't his idea does not mean he won't use the player. Chances are he will because Conte preaches attacking and possession football via the wings. He'll need someone like Pirlo to make that happen.

i want the best players to play and if Pirlo is better then Claudio in e system we are going to play and we win i don't mind that Marchisio doesn't play. But I believe in him as a good player. But a 4-2-4 midfield with Pirlo and Vidal/Diarra is defensily way to weak. Our midfield will be overrun all the time because Pirlo lacks pace and speed to run with the opponent then we need a winger who can defend (pepe)

only not with a typical playmaker
as we attack it will be a 4-2-4 with one of the two midfielder going forward and one of the two backs.
When we defence it will be more like 4-2-3-1

4-4-2 is a pretty versatile and effective formation. We just don't have the right players for it, you don't only need great wingers who can also track back and defend but also such fullbacks. Not to mention the both solid and creative midfield.

That's ofcourse if you're planning on achieving something while playing with such a formation.
