Just for fun I did some data analysis using statistics such as possession, key passes, and others to figure out which central midfielders in world football are statistically superior.

Just to give an idea of my rational - I would use for a possession score, for example, by taking the players passes as a percentage of that team's passes. I also would standardize pass accuracy and adjust it based off total team pass accuracy. For example: Sturaro's score would be a joke because he is on a team with a high passing accuracy..

Anyways here are some names at the top of the list:
-Naby Keita
-David Di Gennaro
-Thiago Alcantara
-Ander Herrera
-Steven Defour
-Toni Kroos
-Fabinho
-Maxime Gonalons
-Sven Kums
-Luka Modric

And the worst:
-Andrea Barberis
-Simon Padoin
-Paul Seguin
-Daniel Wass
-Marten De Roon
-Roger
-Badu

Out of 250 midfielders (must have played 8 games): Juventus players rank...
Khedira - 229
Pjanic - 143
Hernanes - 84
Rincon - 144

If anyone is wondering how Hernanes ranked so high...His defensive stats are very good (very good tackling rate), and he is probably the best midfielder offensively from outside the box with the most shots and goals. His weakest attributes are in possession.
good job  too bad I have to spread some more rep
interesting to see Di Gennaro so high, he's literally a nobody in Serie A

@DAiDEViL :D

Liverpool have made an inquiry for Juventus midfielfer Francesco Cassata (19). They're ready to offer €10m. [Sky]

how good is he ?
He is a starter for Ascoli and he is a important player there. Cassata is a midfielder with a great skillset (Pogba, Thiago Alcantratrarrararaa, Isco) and good shortpassing. His phisycal level is normal I think, like Thiago or Isco. He is a little bit a box-to-box / mezzala player but defensively still not so great. Ideal in a pressing team like Liverpool, I think that's the reason they are interested.

Technique and short passing/combinations are topnotch. Physical normal, speed little bit above normal. Defensively he need still to learn (if he want to be a box-to-box) and his vision is decent. He has the potential for sure. He was one of my favourites with Kastanos as midfielders in our Primavera.

I won't sell him btw, he has a lot of potential and I prefer him as back-up above our current back-ups.

I wrote this about him 19.10.16

Francesco Cassata (18):
Loaned out to Ascoli where he is playing most of time. I don’t follow him there, but know him from Primavera and he has a really good skillset. Technical gifted central-midfielder, he can surprise us. I believe he has the potential to become a good player. Juventus level? Don’t know…

So nothing changed :p

Yeah but Daley Blind had also awesome stats by Ajax.

He never lost possesion, made the most passes in the team and had the highest succesrate. The reality was that he was always passing backwards or to the side and barely played a ball forward.
:agree:

I remember a few seasons ago Leon Britton of Swansea had the best passing statistics in Europe.

Stats can be good but they don't include important factors like positioning, what passes the player chooses not to play, what passes they do play, miss-controls, tracking your runner, what runs the player makes/doesn't make etc.

Surprisingly, there is a lot of granularity.
You can find statistics on:
-% of backwards and forwards
-Bad touches
-Dribbled Past
-Long passes, short passes
-Accurate long balls, accurate short passes
-You can do things like short key passes as a % of total short passes, or key long passes as a % of total long passes

It isn't perfect, but there is a surprising amount of granularity!

You can even strip out crosses and free kicks.
