Zakaria-Locatelli-McKennie if we go with 3. But I think Allegri will stick with 2 mids so Locatelli + one of the other two based on form and matchups

imo we need 2 players in midfield - someone that can run, defend and offer some dynamism and someone that is creative and can assist and score. we don't need Witsel, all of Rabiot, Bentancur, Locatelli are different quality, a bit different characteristics, but essentially the same player - a Witsel. we need a Naingollan/Fellaini and a de Bruyne/Tielemans, we have plenty Witsels already.

for the first type - Kessie is on an expiring contract, Zakaria is on an expiring contract, both make sense to me. for the 2nd type - that's a summer mercato deal.

I think the Witsel idea from Allegri would be to use him as regista so Locatelli can be the "dynamic" midfielder. But I agree, that we need to purchase these players.

yeah we need a regista ASAP. Loca needs more freedom so we can fully utilize his skillset. Thing is Rovella is completely ideal, so we may as well just wait for him if we can’t get him in January.

Locatelli is a regista (holding midfielder, #6, whatever you want to call it). He became what he is at Sassuolo playing the deeper midfielder in two with Sassuolo and Allegri specifically wanted him to come to play in front of the defense.

He is not a more advanced midfielder who has 15-20 G/A and never will be. He can get forward and score some, but he already does that in his current role. Playing him more advanced and putting him in tighter spaces you lose so much of what makes him good.

We seem to make heavy losses on these mediocre players so perhaps we cut the trash players out, buy one top-quality midfielder and incorporate the likes of Rovella, Fagioli and what not.

milan and inter are ahead of us when talents come to mind. they are giving youngsters chances while we have plenty of talent in the u21 team but we don't give them a chance.

Even with two mids you often need to play a mid on the wing to be able to effectively compete with 3 man midfields.
