not sold on any players who are cup tied. Mata will still cost a lot now or after no matter which way we look at it.
How about this idea, play Coman instead of bringing in someone else?
Coman is about as raw as you can get. Not every player can develop at the rate of of Paul Pogba (an abnormal one, where we were spoiled). If we're looking for a player who can seamlessly fit in and help the team compete in the UCL, particularly in that CAM position that we lack depth in, an experienced player with pedigree is a better fit. Coman needs minutes but frankly we still have a gaping hole in that attacking mf position. A clear cut upgrade there definitely improves the team's chances in the knockout round. Even if Mata isn't the top choice, he is a way better option to put in a champions league game because of his experience.
If you look at any of the major European contenders, the only 19-20 year olds breaking into the first team are stand-out prodigies, players who are clearing playing at a level way beyond their years. It doesn't mean those players
won't play, but they are support players. That is what Coman should be right now, because as much as I wish he were, he isn't quite the same freak of nature that Paul Pogba is. Remember Pogba was a sub at first, but forced himself into the team, displacing Marchisio, no easy feat.
But to illustrate with other top end European teams, let's look at high profile 18-19 y/o who have broken into the first team:
Gianluca Gaudino
Raheem Sterling
Adnan Janujaj
Munir
Only 1 of those players is cemented in the starting 11, and I'd argue 2 out of those players can unequivocally, without debate, be said to be further along in their development than Coman (Sterling/Janujaj). Both of those players forced their teams' hand in giving them more starts with Sterling being a fixture in the starting 11.
As much as it's great to want youth to break into the team and get an opportunity, there is a balance, because ultimately inexperience leads to errors and in big games this can be amplified. Coman will get his shot (he's 18), but in the meantime, Juve does need to add another CAM for the starting 11, and it would be ideal if the player was one of European competition quality.
If we're looking for a player who isn't cup tied, the feasible options are for better or for worse:
Firmino
Mata
Van Der Vaart
Tadic
Diamanti
Candreva
Tadic/Firmino would be very expensive relative to their current resumes, but you'd be paying for upside and their ages. Unfortunately, there is also a lot more downside here.
Van Der Vaart, Diamanti would be cheap/likely loanable, but have a very high probability of being ineffective due to age. Not advocating Van Der Vaart, but given that his contract expires at the end of the season, he would be VERY cheap and is already expected to leave Hamburg.
Mata depending on price would solve the problem, but his uncertainty is more of a question of his fit in the team given his playing style.
Candreva would likely cost an arm and a leg since Serie A sides overrate their players and think that Juve are the same financial powerhouse they were in 2001 and can pay 40 million Euro for a good but not amazing player.
