Hamsik is currently playing as a support striker. In a 4-3-1-2 or 4-3-2-1, he'd be playing deeper than where Benitez wants him.

With Mazzarri, he played in a 3-4-2-1 type of formation and was very successful. He played as one of the two attacking midfielders supporting the striker. This isn't very different from what he'd be doing in a 4-3-1-2 or 4-3-2-1.
Whether or not he is the best fit based on his current level of play is one thing, but from a positional perspective he is completely suited to playing the role.

i agree with you about Hamsik. hes a great player no mather what many think about him and was great under Mazzari where he had more freedom and played in his preferred role. in the right system and surrounding he would probably start putting up top performances again. but there are really no indications that Napoli would sell him to us. maybe some exchange to Gabbiadini with us paying extra money but i still doubt it. he is their captain (?) and has been a key player for years. letting him go to us would be something their fans wont tolerate and ADL would also never do that.
So when's Asamoah back? We really need him. I'm really interested to see if Allegri considers him a LB or not.
If that's thw case I think we need a RB more than a LB, but from an immediate point of view we nees more a LB in case Asamoah isn't back right on time.
Apart from that the only position where we could realistically strength is the CAM. Pereyra has been doing real good on Serie A, but today's match let us see how limited he is. But even there I can't think on nobody to get, maybe Mata? Isn't really realistic.

if we are getting an AM or a winger in january he should not be cup tied. whats the point in getting a cup tied player in january if we can win serie a with our current squad too. but knowing our last few winter mercatos when we always signed only one player, we might add Kramaric and close the mercato
