If you guys had the choice between Shaqiri and Mata for 20m, who'd you pick and why?

It's a stupid question because Mata will never come for 20m. At least not anytime soon. But let's forget about the money for a moment. I think Mata is very good but he'd make our formation very narrow. In terms of quality he's superior to Shaqiri most definitely but I'd pick Shaqiri because of his characteristics.

While Mata's presence along with Tevez, Llorente, Vidal and Pogba would make it work only through the middle I think we've been through that with the 352 and we shouldn't really go that way since our fullbacks are the very same wingbacks from the old 352. We all know they're good enough to be support players on the wings and nothing more. Mata's presence along with Tevez and Llorente would most probably push to wings Pogba and Vidal which we shouldn't really hope for since we saw it already with Allegri's 352.

Shaqiri in terms of offense is an upgrade over Pereyra hence I think he'd suit our needs much better. We simply need a player that's able to beat players 1v1, cross and offer runs behind defense as well as switching wings to stretch the play - it's very important since our fullbacks aren't good enough offensively. This way we could keep Pogba and Vidal in more central roles as well as CF and Tevez.

In all honesty it'd be good to find someone better than Shaqiri so the Mata comparison would be more fair. Since Mata is not coming for anything close to the fee on the other hand 20m would definitely land us Shaqiri. Comparing them this way Shaqiri is a much more possible option because of the transfer fee and wages.
