For some of you Ubuntu was the first distro. Others have been around longer than that. In the rich distro landscape, everyone tends to find something that pleases them personally. Meanwhile I keep singling out Ubuntu like it's the best thing ever. Why is that? This is why:

Two major Norwegian online technology websites that test drive Ubuntu and report a bunch of problems with it. Do you think they have ever reviewed any other distro? Do you think they even would be doing this today if the Ubuntu shall we say revolution never took place? Would they be writing about Fedora? Hell no. *This* is the first instance of Norwegian popular media that even acknowledges that linux exists as a real desktop OS.

Ubuntu is precious. Not just for what it is, but for what it means.

Ah, Marts. Another one of these threads that mean absolutely nothing but alienspeak to the general populace, save you and your geek brethren.

I've missed this place (and its oddities) more than I realized.

Indeed. Much has changed around here, even if you're still the resident geek.

Don't mind me though, I don't belong in this thread.

I heard it's very good, but I'm too lazy to install it and get used to it.
Trust me, it recquires only a little bit more time and energy but it is worth it more than you can imagine. I always thought I was lazy to even try it but now I know that I sit on the top and it's really ugly down there.

So you use Ubuntu all the time? Aren't there sometimes problems to install or properly use certain software?

Yes, but what has his millions bought the distro? It's not like he's paying people to write these reviews. And it's not like others don't have a good backing, Fedora is backed by the biggest linux company there is.

Let us talk Linux in general, a modified version of ubuntu is the distro I use but I am planning to change once my new hardware arrives. But that is not the point.

Installing applications is a totally different experience than that on Winblows, once installed it should work. Then you come into the fun of making stuff work, it's a feeling you never get with your current operating system because with Winblows stuff either work or don't, on Linux there are ways to fix.

Do you want more or did I "sell" you the product?

Stability, eye-candy, flexibility, Martin help me, etc.

What package manager does Fedora use, Martin? And if the answer makes me puke please refrain from answering.

I'm a sucky salesman. And frankly not a very committed one. We need Graham and Rami in here.

Ahh revolution is in the air!!

For real, with Gutsy, it has raised a couple of eyebrows. I don't wanna go as far as saying it's the "tipping point", but I really think Ubuntu has got a winning formula....

So you use Ubuntu all the time? Aren't there sometimes problems to install or properly use certain software?

Aren't there problems in installing software in Windows? personally I faced a lot back in the day. But the difference between Windows and Linux, is that if something doesn't work then thats probably it, you can try a couple of tricks here and there, but thats about it. While in Linux, I would go as far as saying that for 95% of the cases there is a solution or a workaround to a specific problem, the Internet is full of guides and howtos. And the community just lives on helping others...

Do the Linux fans agree with the info on this page? (also the disadvantages) http://www.cae.wisc.edu/site/public/?title=whyuselinux

One very important advantage that is not mentioned is the various update managers. Where in Windows the only updates you get are system specific, in Linux (say Ubuntu Linux) you would have a package manager called apt-get that will update and upgrade ALL your software not just the system. So it will update your firefox, your flash player, your vlc player....etc. Now thats neat ;)

That article also states that learning the command line is a disadvantage. I would think otherwise actually, the command line is powerful and flexible and it WILL TEACH you how computers work....you will not understand this until you get a bit proficient in it...if you are on board that is :D

I would also disagree with th installation bit. Actually installing Ubuntu is a breeze much more easier than Windows (XP that is don't know about Vista and don't plan to :p)
