But you know something? This sports team thing is very much like religion in one aspect. And that is how people sort of take turns to announce how much they love the club. One person says it, others sing the chorus. Next time another person opens the thread, again he gets the chorus. If you want to know why it's such a strong bond I think the answer is this. In just how much reinforcement there is, how often you have the opportunity to "witness" how another person "really believes", thus strengthening your own belief. The very same mechanism that you find in religious rituals.

Very true. I even take a step further and compare this to the level of this supporting everything which represents your nationality thing. You have to be loyal to it, you have to stick to it no matter what. Just like your religion, your nationality (and everything which is representing it) must be like a treasure to you which you have to keep hold of in the best way possible even when it actually doesn't even make sense to yourself.

I have already lost a big part of my interest, not because of Calciopoli, not because of the current awful form, I'm just not the type of fan I used to be anymore. I like Juve, I like to get the chance to watch them despite the poor coverage of Serie A games in Iran but I'm not obsessed with them anymore. However I'm not going to pick another team to support because the reason for me not being so interested in Juve like the past is that I'm simply not a football fan like I used to be.

I feel exactly the same way with Liverpool. I never get to see them play, though I follow them everyday in the media they feel much more secondary to other facets of my life. The US NT and my general goings on take precedence. With that said, I don't really like anyone else either and many teams just simply disgust me.

Though you might not be "the same fan you one were" you're still a fan and that's what counts. People seem to forget that football is simply just a game and while it may gives a momentary escape from reality there are still much more important things in the world.
