So you speak a lot of languages, right? And you want some credit for it, right? Of course you do. ;) Nothing easier than to check your Paco, in just 5 minutes.

The Paco standard for language proficiency is a revolutionary new metric for checking language ability. Just follow this simple, intuitive example and you'll have your Paco score in no time.

First, we have Paco levels. For every language, select the highest Paco level you can master in that language. That becomes your Paco proficiency in the language.

Paco 1 - did I hear something?
(would move out of the way of someone with a gun and yelling very loud)

Russian

Paco 2 - it’s just like language x right?
(understanding the Emergency Exit sign)

Catalan, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Afrikaans-, Latin

Paco 3 - somo tehm words re no tspel correct
(one in five-ish in a sentence)

Spanish, Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian, Czech, Slovak+

Paco 4 - small subset, no grammar
(can read the sports section-ish)

Italian

Paco 5 - kinda sorta wanted to learn it once
(could speak three sentences in a row if my life depended on it)

French, Dutch

Paco 6 - heard it on the telly
(roughly got tone and grammar but have to translate words from a related language)

Swedish, Danish-, Nynorsk+

Paco 7 - omfg pwnage
(native)

Polish, Norwegian, English

Now you just add up your Pacos to get your Paco score, so for example:

1 x Paco1 + 5 x Paco2 + 6 x Paco3 + 1 x Paco4 + 2 x Paco5 + 3 x Paco6 + 3 x Paco7 = 82 Paco

So the next time your boss is considering sending you to Brazil (first class, 5 star hotel, tickets to everything) to sign that Very Big Contract and asks about your Portuguese, you can point to your Paco and be sure he picks you!

There's only Serbo-Croatian, it's just that every side feels so special they want to have their own language, but they're all the same. There's no Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian that won't understand each other, the differences are minimal, perhaps some minor ones in grammar.

Don't make me go edit that wikipedia article, damn it. :D

Doesn't matter, if it's a distinct official language it's good enough to brag about :D

    Paco 1 - did I hear something?
(would move out of the way of someone with a gun and yelling very loud)

Look, it's a bloody gun: 7,229. See Ethnologue.

    Paco 2 - it’s just like language x right?
    (understanding the Emergency Exit sign)

Catalan, bizarrely enough. Probably some more, but I'm not widely travelled enough to know!

Paco 3 - somo tehm words re no tspel correct
(one in five-ish in a sentence)

    German, though it was better.

Paco 4 - small subset, no grammar
    (can read the sports section-ish)

    None

Paco 5 - kinda sorta wanted to learn it once
(could speak three sentences in a row if my life depended on it)

    None.

Paco 6 - heard it on the telly
(roughly got tone and grammar but have to translate words from a related language)

Irish. It is too a language!

    Paco 7 - omfg pwnage
    (native)

    English

Now you just add up your Pacos to get your Paco score, so for example:

    7229 x Paco1 + 1 x Paco2 + 1 x Paco3 + 0 x Paco4 + 0 x Paco5 + 1 x Paco6 + 1 x Paco7 = 7247 Paco

    I win.

btw I'm not so sure about some of the categories... isn't it easier to speak three sentences than read the sports section?

    Paco 1 - did I hear something?

    Arabic

    Paco 2 - it’s just like language x right?
    (understanding the Emergency Exit sign)

    German, Spanish, Thai, Latin

Paco 3 - somo tehm words re no tspel correct
(one in five-ish in a sentence)

    None

    None

Paco 5 - kinda sorta wanted to learn it once
(could speak three sentences in a row if my life depended on it)

    Japanese, French

Paco 6 - heard it on the telly
(roughly got tone and grammar but have to translate words from a related language)

    Italian

    Paco 7 - omfg pwnage
    (native)

    Korean, English

    1 x Paco1 + 4 x Paco2 + 0 x Paco3 + 0 x Paco4 + 2 x Paco5 + 1 x Paco6 + 2 x Paco7 = 39 Paco

That depends. I can read some Italian but I'm hard pressed to compose a single sentence in French that would be grammatically correct. I also understand more French than Italian generally.

Simple. If you can "speak three sentences in a row if my life depended on it" on say Thai, then you put down Thai under Paco 5. Otherwise if you can only "read the sports section-ish" in Thai, you put it down under Paco 4. Rinse and repeat for every language.
