All I know, is if I was a kid and idolized someone that sits infront of a computer screen all day solving puzzles and playing video games, I'd probably kill myself.

No offense dudes. I'm a very shallow person.
You're hardly alone. There's something deeply wrong about a society that idolises vacant, pretty people and denigrates smart people who have sub-average social skills.

I know what you mean. Using your brain successfully is such a terribly embarrassing thing. I mean the world in which we live would never exist without such people, but no way in hell would I ever want to be associated with someone who thinks.

Even death is preferable to that.

Oh, I never said there is anything wrong about idolizing intelligent people. I suppose you assume all the intelligent people in the world sit around all day playing video games and solving puzzles infront of their laptops.

I don't idolize anyone, I don't see why I should; I find it very strange why people would choose to idolize Beckhams and computer geeks alike, I have nothing against people who base their lives on their computers, I just don't think they should be looked up to. Again, no offense.

You're right. Intelligent people drive motorcycles really fast off rooftops guns blazing, that's where they get their thinking done. And after that they go windsurfing and skydiving. There's just no need for a computer or a desk for say a mathematician or a scientist to do his work, that's all in the past.

And what's the harm in looking up to someone exactly?

Del piero is intelligent and is idolized by a countless number of people, yet he doesn't have to sit infront of a computer screen all day. Are you starting to get the picture?

There's no harm. I just don't like it, I think every person has his own individuality and shouldn't try to immitate others, it seems like an unintelligible thing to do in my opinion.

I really don't. You just said idolizing is bad, so how is looking up to Del Piero any better? Btw are you showing off DP as some kind of intellectual now? Cause that would be pretty absurd. It's one thing to be intelligent, it's another thing entirely to be a chess master.

And I still don't know why sitting at a computer is supposed to be bad, you realize you're doing that right now, yes? Office work is probably the most common type of work these days, so that means all those people should be ashamed of themselves?

I think the word you're looking for is "inspiration". Someone who does something well has the power to inspire others to undertake the effort to excel at it. It starts early in life when kids look up to their parents and want to be like them. Gradually they find other role models for various areas of life. And it gives people goals, it answers questions like "what should I do with my life?".

Big Bang Theory definitely throws in references to M-theory and other stuff. But, IMO, it's not really watchable beyond the occasional hot chick. IT Crowd has its silly moments, but some of the lines and characters are just classic.

I like the smart lines that Sheldon throws, Leonard and Howard are really boring, Raj is fun and what makes Penny funny is the contrast she adds to four characters at the same time.

I still find IT Crowd funnier but Big Bang Theory is much geekier.

No question there. Big Bang totally drops the heavy geek bomb.

IT Crowd has more of the cultural references, but there it's more social awkwardness than geekdom.

And for the record, Martin, I think "Chuck" is a great show. But Chuck Bartowski does not qualify as a geek. Sure, he works with a bunch of nerds and all. But he's more like a polished-up nerd affiliate... more of a self-effacing, under-employed charismatic guy who pulls a reverse of The Incredibles. It's geek lite at best.

Indeed. And it's so overdone that the geek reference is largely lost.

Maybe, but he does the job for me. I don't think you have to have every last geek characteristic to be a geek. He has enough.

True. But the writing and character development on that show is what's top notch. There are moments of that show with its style of humor that I haven't quite seen since Seinfeld's heyday. Maybe not as brilliant as "Coupling" was with Jeff, but for that kind of character-driven absurdist humor, it's pretty tough to beat.

But he's got to be one of the most universally charismatic TV geeks of all time. Which almost disqualifies him on those merits alone.

Jeff on Coupling was a train wreck in my book. For some reason he became a woman? I thought his original character was great, but then...

Anyway, there are bits and pieces I like about the show but most of it is forgettable. Aside from the two geeks almost all the characters are complete crap, starting with the boss of the company. Now you mention Seinfeld, that's the counter example.

If you want a quirky show but much better check out Black Books.

Maybe, but how are you gonna sell a show with an uncharismatic protagonist? That's shooting yourself in the foot.

    :lol2: @ the U.S. show "Coupling".

Oh, man. That was one of America's worst all time historical cultural exports from the UK.
I heard it was bad, I haven't seen any episode. Neither have I seen any episode of the US The Office. Do you think "your" version of The Office is good?

Lately I got a DVD of season 1 of IDEAL, it's good. I also watched half of season 1 of 15 Storeys and that was really really good.
