store family photos, edit them. nothing professional, but i wouldn't want anything slower than the current internal sata drive (some samsung 7200rpm hdd)

It's going to depend on what you want to spend. If it's just photos, you might be able to get away with just a USB. If you want something with a much faster R/W speed, then go with a thunderbolt-driven HDD @ +/-7200 rpm.

thanks, i'll do some digging. a nas would be better because of convenience and raid backup, but i'm concerned about speed. thunderbolt is certainly faster
