@swag So are you 100% Portugal residence until further notice?
Not quite. Still have the wifey’s childhood home in Napa that we camp out in as our foothold in the U.S. for travels back, etc.

Meanwhile still renting here. I made a deposit on a promissory note for a brand new place since May 2021, when it technically finished construction. But city utility inspections and all are still bureaucratic as hell. I might move in next month.

Do you sometimes entertain the idea of renouncing the US citizenship?

Was upstate once digging a hole to plant a tree with with Grandfather. My whole family is outside, meanwhile a baby black bear walks up on us from behind, I didn't see it until it was maybe 40 feet away. The implication of the mother being somewhere not far behind was the really scary part, one never showed up thankfully. They're nervy now though, we had 10-11 people outside and it didn't care at all.

No. Sure, I could do more with my money outside of the U.S. if I wasn't under the IRS's panopticon watch list, making me a financial leper everywhere else. But the returns and breadth of options in the U.S are still way better. Give me shady Robinhood over eToro anyday.

The main reason to renounce would be taxes. Portugal and the US has a no-double-taxation Lite agreement... the US still gets you over a certain amount. But I barely get there, and it helps that I qualify for non-habitual residency here. Which means my tax rate in this socialist country is less than half that in California.

Another reason would be if I had a ton of crypto assets, as Portugal doesn't charge cap gains. But those are too speculative at my age to take very seriously as anything other than a Hail Mary pass.

You and your lovely better half are more than welcome!

Truth be told, the most aggressive homeless people I've ever encountered in the entire world were in Hartford, CT. Those people would walk up to you and start grabbing your arms and taking the clothes off your back. Insane. And I've been in the townships of South Africa.

I'm part wondering if this so-called exploding bear population is just a lot of scary Hartford homeless lacking a shave and a shower.

Never lived with gf Sheila

Man never gives away his freedom

Aha, assumed you did cuz you broke news of moving over there cuz of the gf, so figured that meant living together.

But smart, never ideal to move in together too quick unless you absolutely sure. Super awkward if it doesn't work out and you break when you living together.
