I fucking hate commies. I mean I loved it when during my studies the government paid my apartment rent for N years and that my parents could get expensive medical treatment for free but now I fucking hate that useless immigrants steal my tax money to buy iphones. TAXATION IS THEFT

We all like free stuff, but when its your turn to work hard while the government steals half your money, that's when it dawns on you how shitty it is.

It depends. If it goes to healthcare for example you might actually end up with more cash than if you had to get your own healthcare. There's also the fact that inequality generally leads to more crime and unsafe neighbourhoods, which not only sucks because part of the land becomes inaccessible, but also sucks because housing prices in good neighbourhoods go up dramatically. This is just one example, but what I'm saying is that it is very difficult to measure the actual impact of taxation on your income and wealth.

What is intolerable though is squandering taxpayer money. Every government should strive for 100% efficiency (even if that is a practical impossibility).

Thanks for a serious answer to my trolling post :p

On a more serious note I agree with most of your post. Obviously when done right, taxation and the welfare state would in theory reduce inequality which in turn would reduce crime and make for a generally more safe country;but I would add that IMO a critical determinant of whether or not the welfare state would work in a given country is that country's culture. Culture IMO is one of the main reasons it works well in countries like the Scandinavian ones, Finland, Netherlands but not as well in Mediterranean countries.

Just made it to Lisbon today after their commie May Day celebrations. Yeah, they have a Socialist prime minister. I’m going to try to meet him Sunday night as we’re at a dinner together at the Palacio Estoril - where Ian Fleming was inspired to apparently write many a Bond novel. :D (True story, bro.)

Dunno how I feel about the commie thing here yet, although I find out tomorrow when I go to the Conservatory to apply for Portuguese citizenship. Yeah, this will likely make the American Department of Motor Vehicles seem like a wet dream of efficiency.
