I eat chicken breasts all the time and they're fine. GMO stuff catches way too much shit. It comes down to making bad choices and using food as a comfort. No one is supposed to eat a tub of ice cream in a sitting yet a surprising amount of people do. Skip the drinks at Starbucks loaded with sugar and cream. Think about what you're putting into your body.

It's probably just that European smugness. ;)

But you don't have to eat fast food. Lots of fat people out there who never eat fast food.
No, it's really not. I'm not saying it's worse or anything. Just very different.

That's certainly true of things like chicken and eggs. American chickens are mutant meat-machines consisting of ginormous genetic breast implants and little muscle.
You should see Belgian cows. They are so muscular through specific breeding that they can no longer give birth naturally. They just lie in a field and are 1000 pound pure muscle.

The GMO freak-out seems a little in line with those who freak out about fluoride in drinking water. It's a bit weird to go crying about things being "unnatural" while in the meantime our crops have become freakish, factory-farmed monocultures ... and most animal husbandry is no different.

People also freak out about trace doses of chemicals like BHT that might make it in their Jamba Juice, but meanwhile they happily dose up the thing with their mysterious and vague health-themed "Boosts" which have mystery ingredients, have never been tested and validated for health concerns, and only been in existence for a few years. And yet they shit in their pants about potential health side effects for something like coffee, which humans have over 1,000 years of epidemiological evidence to show it's pretty much irrelevant to our health.

My favorite thing about the bulletproof snake oil is that they say putting yak butter in your coffee "gives you more energy".

You know what? Energy is measured in calories. You could put a stack of pancakes covered in butter and syrup in my coffee, and it will definitely give me more energy.

Sure, that's why I mentioned food quality. I'd say the majority of food in grocery stores is not quality food. Add into that the advertising machine of the US food industry and it isn't surprising to see why people make the choices they do.

I think the biggest reason for obesity is our propensity to chalk everything up to personal responsibility and play the blame game rather than simply demanding a higher standard from the food industry.
From an economics perspective, you buy the cheapest food you can while keeping everything else equal. If we eat garbage everyday, we will for the rest of our lives. It's up to the people to change their ways, just like everything else in life.

you dont eat chick-fil-a???
Only fast food joint I have from time to time.

Man they finally opened one here in Rhode Island. You would have though the Pope was visiting.

Granted, it's not to the level of when an Olive Garden opened in South Dakota and they called it a "Gourmet Italian Restaurant", but still.

Sonic is supposed to be opening up in Rhode Island sometime soon
I thought Providence had some amazing Italian restaurants?

Dude, if you ever come back to the US, let me know and we will have a few drinks.

Well this is the drug industry in the US, which is another reason why we fail. But you do admit that certain chemicals in our food are bad, right? As a Cali man I would expect that.

What I find weird in America is the taste of vegetables and fruit. They all taste like water. I'm not sure if it's me, but the taste in Europe seems 'fuller'. Not sure if that makes sense, just something both me and my girlfriend noticed.
You know the last thing I want to do is give you more ammo :p but truth be told, fruits and vegetable in Europe, at least in the Mediterranean countries really do taste differently than they do here. I was in Europe on holiday a couple of weeks ago, and eating fruit over there made me feel like I've never eaten real fruit before :p

Unless if you are in India, the bovine blesses you.

Btw Dru, when I first met you, you were vegetarian. When did that change?
The liberation was already in progress actually. The metamorphosis completed later that summer of 2010.
