I think society has a need for this crap. It's the only explanation why the stuff comes up in the first place, whether it's The Twist or the Macarena or the Harlem Shake.

I don't know how the need comes in question but I agree that these things are accepted in the society, they become popular and annoy only a small percentage of the people. The need I am still trying to figure out.

My point being that many people seem to have a social need for some ephemeral dance phenomenon that encourages them to stoke the fires and keep the meme alive. Things that you or I would kill stillborn before it had the chance to see daylight.
