After hurricane Sandy people are scared now. It's predicted to be a very powerful storm, not just because of the snow but because of high winds and coastal flooding. I don't get the gas lines either though, because as you said you cannot drive around in a foot of snow. Massachusetts is going to get hit very hard. They and Rhode Island already declared a State of Emergency.
The past few years have not been anything new for the east coast with the exception of the killer storm that crippled the entire state of CT back in October 2011. I was truly frightened for my mom at the time since there was no way to contact her and she had no electricity. It was worth the worry.
