Nzoric, thought I'd reply here to stop that thread going well off topic. The Middle East is obviously extremely fascinating in that respect. Is it the general history of the region or a particular people(s), period of history etc that you are interested in? I'd just say that learning the language and culture from a modern perspective opens a lot of doors.

I'll definitely learn Arabic at some point in time. 1/2 of my friend group speak it.

I'm not a fan of studying general history of an area. I'd rather study them all on their own and then draw a conclusion on my own, if you know what I mean? My main focus lies in the colonization of Northern Africa/The Middle East. My first semester subject was called "Middle East in the 20th Century" where we had a short general course spanning from The Mamluks up to the end of the Ottomans. What really caught my interest was Palestine though. But as I see it, the two years of my masters are far from enough to learn everything I want to know about that part of the world, so my goal of drawing my own conclusion could come at my dissertation perhaps

My whole family lives there and i was facinated by the pride walk and the stories of 40 minute ferry rides to france where can have some awesome nightlife. All LIES!

I have a couple of friends who head there this semister, i think i'll let them go in as the first line of defense and so 6 months later

But even if the education is free other things like cost of living will burn a hole in my pockets and my balls. If i decide to take it i might have to start planning now.

It's been weird. Normally May-Oct is almost zero rain, so we make up for it in the winter. But this winter has been dry, which makes people freak out with the 'D' word (drought) for lack of rain water and mountain runoff in the reservoirs. But I heard it's supposed to snow for 10 straight days in the mountains soon, so it's going to be unusual and wet here for a bit.
