I read somewhere that some people tell you not to bother with the cover letter. Which is surprising, because that's the only place where you write why you want the job.

Well these guys want a cover letter, resume, writing sample, transcript, 3 references, a testicle, 6 pints of blood (not required to be yours) and a partridge in a pear tree.

Generally, in my field a good cover letter can get you an interview when your resume may not do the trick by itself. I had an interview a while back and it seemed to me that they were looking for someone way more experienced than myself (which they were). So afterward I asked one of the interviewers (a woman I have interviewed with in the past) why they interviewed me if they knew I didn't have the experience they wanted. She said my cover letter added context to the experience I did have more than other more experienced candidates.

I've never written a cover letter and been offered about 85% of the jobs I've interviewed for. Then again, his industry is much more competitive than mine normally is.

Same here

cover letters just don't qualify in my field because it can't give anyone a context of the scope of my experience.

Just got back from a meeting with one of my disertation tutors. I had created quite a large workload for it myself (coupled to all the other work I need to do)...she just quadrupled it. Instead of focusing on 3 main topics for my lit review i am now doing 12. (the lit review is 3000 words max and i already have 28 books in those 3 topics to read.....)

That Isn't what I am doing, my disseration is entirely new research that i am conducting myself. The point if the lit review is to establish that main theories surrounding the topic areas - the limitations of them, what other studies have been done and analysing there findings and then explaining where my research fits into the academic field.

Its an essay explaining why I should do my research.

Its the same procedure that PHD's have to follow and any academic research that is going to get published....but mine isnt getting published.

My research is apparently fascinating so I have been given two dissertation tutors (im the only out of 200 MA students in the dept to get two) One is the dirrector of MA courses and the other is deputy head of the faculty....I am also chummy with one of my lecturers because I have complained the reading he sets us and no one else has, so now he always asks me stuff and gives me things to study that are more interesting lol. I spoke to him and he said he will help me apply for funding and put together my proposal and put in a good word for me to get a job teaching in the dept. It does feel a bit weird.....i'm 22.

3-5 years depending on my research. I dont think i want to work for a uni, i suffer badly from Glossophobia so i wouldnt be able to do lectures. I would hope to work for a humanitarian NGO in pr or a supra-national organisation in PR.

I don't believe in political parties and view them as one of the fundamental flaws of almost every liberal democracy - They would have to force me to abandon my morals before I worked for one.
