There's something socially strange in some places. Like a siege mentality. It's as if snowfall suddenly institutes martial law. I don't know how half these people would cope with what's going on in Egypt...
The worst part is when people who aren't confident driving in snow go out in it and then fuck up everyone's day. In DC last week people were stuck on Georgia Ave for 12 hours. I couldn't believe that shit.
Yeah, it took some of my dad's colleagues 8 hours to get home on I-270. Apparently many just abandoned their vehicles right in the middle of the expressway. Fuckin' crazy.

1) Most roadways in the US are black in color (which is unfortunate for other reasons).
2) Black ice is mostly encountered at night after a re-freeze. Nigh is black, hence black ice.
We could pick nits all day long over vernacular used in the english language, but we'd be here forever. It's just easier to go with the flow on this one Martin.

Oh, DC is the worst. You have a mix of northerners who know how to drive in snow, and southerners who don't have a clue and follow the leader without any training nor experience.
And I know of stories where not only did people abandon their cars in the middle of the Beltway, but they did so about two lanes over from the shoulder.
It would be called "mood ice". Not to be confused with Smirnoff Ice. Not to be confused with Yakov Smirnov. Which, ironically, loops us back to my first reply here.

I-81 was the scene of several spectacular wrecks. The trucks all shut down where they were and it became a hillbilly obstacle course. The median was littered with upside down SUVs and pick up trucks.
