Any of you guys use Songbird?
http://getsongbird.com/

I've toyed with it in the past and was "meh", but they're making some real aggressive product changes. I do worry if they are trying too much to take on Evil iTunes head-to-head.

I ask because I have a call with the CEO next week about a potential job, so I'm curious as to any thoughts here.

If you do start working for them tell them dropping support for linux is.. how do you say.. er.. dumb?

Nah, I don't care. When Songbird was new I thought it was gonna be great, just like Firefox. But it's a dot on the horizon.

You're the first person I remember telling me about Songbird. :hi: So I'm glad to see your response on this.

But how big is the Linux market for them? I suppose they lose a lot in potential third-party innovation, however, and there are far more parallels now with the Android set, etc.

They're strategy now is less about the software and more about the utility of universal access, storage, cloud stuff, etc.

Thanks for the opinion.

I really have no idea, man. Like I said I thought they would succeed, using XUL seemed like a good idea and all that. Then.. no idea what happened. Amarok has come, taken the world with storm, and gone to pieces. All this happened after Songbird was begun.

Is songbird like iTunes with a downloading part like Limewire attached?
It's kind of an iTunes replacement. iTunes is evil bloatware -- I've always hated it with a passion. But I tinkered with Songbird and found it too buggy for me. Oddly, what I've long loved most is only available for Windows: MediaMonkey. I've run that through Parallels if necessary.

But the difference now seems that Songbird's approach is now going to be about ubiquity and all the back-end storage and access to your music collections.

Good point about Amarok. Amazing that something came and blew up in the time since Songbird has been on the market.

When the first KDE-on-Windows alpha builds came out I thought Amarok would take the world by storm :lol2:

Then came the disaster called Amarok2 that probably never will regain the same success of 1.3, 1.4.

    Define: "bloatware"

A piece of software that starts simple to solve simple problems or provide basic service when it is first released. Then over time, features -- more and more useless -- get added over time. Adding to the complexity, adding to the amount of memory that the program takes up, adding to the time it takes for the program to load and the resources it consumes. It becomes a Frankenstein of more peripheral functions that get bolted onto it. Soon it requires a dedicated CPU and 2Gb of memory just to run it, and it starts trying to do things like find dates for your divorced friend's mom.

10 years ago that was Microsoft Word. Today the model is iTunes.

Worse, iTunes on something like Windows even adds evil programs in your automatic Windows start-up that do nothing but sniff for Apple products and the opportunity to launch itself on a moment's notice. You have to alter your computer configuration just to turn them off.

You must see this. The very best writing I've ever seen on this topic:

As bad as iTunes is, Adobe has the worst software developers on the planet.

Adobe PDF Reader is handled like dribbleware: you are nagged to update it every week for some ridiculous minor change, and each update requires you to download a fat, multi-megabyte file and reinstall everything.

And to make matters worst of all, each update requires you to reboot your system at the most inopportune times.

Yeah, Adobe is on my shit list too.

Hmmm, I don't find that it hinders my Mac that much when I open and run iTunes...

shit like this is why I like
    $ apt-get install <something>

Windows is just a trash heap of scum trying to foist their spyware, adware on you, even installing the java runtime has this I think (think I remember someone mentioned it). There is absolutely no respect for "what I choose to install is what I get". I imagine it's probably not big on Macs yet? Well, let's hope it doesn't spread there too.
