Lame Rooney Dashes England South Africa Hopes
The Manchester United Striker Will Miss Close to Two Months of Action
By Manny Wright Last updated: 31st March 2010

Possible ligament damage for Wayne Rooney leaves both United fans and England hopefuls worried about the rest of the season.

The Manchester United forward managed himself a goal in the first leg of the Champions League Quarter-Final match against Bayern Munich before pulling up with an apparent ankle injury. The world class striker tried to impose himself on Bayern centre-forward Mario Gomez, but ended up landing on an uneven patch of turf.

United head physio Rob Swire stated in a phone interview to Sky Sports, "An immediate diagnosis suggested Rooney only had an ankle sprain, but further results showed that the English starlet could be out for quite some time. Our staff reports early this morning that the striker has ligament damage in his ankle, resulting in at the very least a month's absence in the stands."

The most accurate recovery time frame for Rooney will be two month's time, right before the World Cup in South Africa.

England takes on the United States in the Group C opening encounter at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, South Africa on June 12.
