@ Andy, I get it now. I was thinking it was strange for the bow shape to be called "straight", but it's named after the straight wind in the middle.

A Derecho is an area of storms shaped like a bow, or similar to a bow and arrow. The reason why the area of storms is shaped like that is because they have strong straight line winds pushing through at the center of the system.

That Derecho system actually worked its way down to just East of my area today. It was moving at 70mph!

Ahh, okay. That would explain why it was so damn windy.

It's pretty cool stuff. Those sort of storms sometimes have tornado-force winds with them, causing tons of damage.
