That is more or less what I was driving at. Market forecasts were not that promising and in lieu of the housing market so unstable and people defaulting on loans with no hope of ever being able to pay them (and shame on the banks/mortgage industry for giving them out to those whom were risky) I think those in the auto industry could have done a better job for their own benefit. I understand the housing market was the catalyst in this disaster but like you said, and what I was trying to say is that not only did the auto industry not make vehicles competitive enough to the Japs but they continued to make cars that were gas guzzlers and that had nothing to do with the housing market. What I am trying to say is, amidst some pretty wild economic predictions that ultimately became reality the auto industry was not quick enough to regain their niche in the US auto industry. The smart Japs continued to make efficient yet highly reliable cars (even the Germans). Now all the people that bought homes and defaulting on their payments either had or wanted large SUVs in which gas was so astronomical at the time they were only digging their graves deeper in my opinion.
Now outsourcing that is a whole different story and can of worms. But, free market capitalism will have its winners and losers. That is the risk that you gotta take.
But what you said is that the automakers are at fault for the current disaster. That's not the truth. Even despite them making shity cars for the past 20 years or more, they had no part in this collapse except for not providing more jobs to the American people. They are part of the problem, but they did not trigger this. It's been widely accepted the car makers have been farting around for decades now.
If you want to place some blame on people for this debacle, look at the Federal Reserve, investment bankers, insurance companies, mortgage companies, and those who speculated housing prices would always rise. They are the real culprits.
And please, don't castigate the automakers for asking for a bailout when those fucking douchebag bankers were able to take trillions at the whim of hat. Lets please start blaming the right people here.
I'm not taking this out on you, but I don't think the US public has any clue what's going on here.
