The over-hyped argument is the oldest trick in the book. We do that with footballers here all the time: great players who get a lot of press suddenly can't live up to their presumed Mt.-Olympus-like god status. So there's sometimes a tendency to dismiss things just because they're hyped, regardless of quality.
In MGMT's case, I really honestly wanted to like them. But on Oracular Spectacular, for example, there are a handful of songs that are OK and the rest are, IMO, throwaways. More than half of the mp3s from that album ended up in my Trash Bin.
