You can give it a try without even touching your system. You download this and burn the image on a CD.

Then put in the CD in the drive and reboot your computer, run the Live version of the CD. It will load the complete environment with all the default applications from the CD without installing or doing anything on the hard drive. Look around, you can even use the internet when you get bored, reboot and remove the CD, your computer will run as it was.
