I agree, in some respects. I have not had enough experience with Italian yet to see whether they use it religiously or not, but I hear it a lot in French. "Il faut que tu sois content" for instance would sound really wrong if you wrote "il faut que tu seras content". But this might also be because I am more vigorously trained in French :)

With regard to the French not understanding, I think it's a combination of not wanting to understand and laziness. Especially in Paris. And even when you do speak it perfectly they still often don't want to talk to you. I haven't been to Italy in years, so I have no clue as to how they do it there. Do you think there is a similar problem there at all?
I suppose it depends on where you are. If you go to some place like a tourist information desk at Termini and there is a line they might be nice yet give you the vibe that they don't appreciate how clueless you are. And it's sometimes like that in places where they're used to working in a rush hour mindset, lots of customers coming through. But apart from those they are usually more than happy to talk to you even if you know nothing. That is very encouraging and it makes you feel good just for knowing a little.

You also get these unexpected acts of kindness, like in this small fishing town (I don't even remember where it was now) we had to get to a supermarket before closing time and we couldn't find one, plus the town was very hard to navigate with most streets being one way. So I ask this pensioner guy and we soon establish that I don't know where anything is in this place. So he actually takes me on foot, I'm in the car driving behind him slowly, for a couple of blocks until we get there.

It's not a novice weapon, it's classified as a machine pistol, it rocks out 32 rounds in 4 seconds all through a 3.5 inch barrel.

You need to train with longer, more able weapons than that...
Well, he couldn't hit an air conditioner with a shotgun so...:D
