Makes a lot of sense honestly. It would be like my flying to NYC when it’s a 2 hour drive
When I first moved to Portugal 5 years ago, my boss would like to fly from Lisbon to Porto. The surface math tells you it's faster and all. It takes 50 minutes compared to a train that could take 3-4 hours for a fast train and longer for the slower local trains.
But flying sucks. It's so much easier and better to stroll a few minutes before departing at the train station. And then when you're on it, there's more space and more you can do. I haven't flown to Porto in 4 years. The flights still exist, but it's a lamer alternative to a solid train and it's barely any time difference in the end when you account for travel to and from some suburban airport, getting through security, gate boarding, baggage, etc.
I don't get these flying romantics who read articles about the greatest airports in the world and their wondrous airport lounges. To me flying is like dentistry. Any time I spend in an airport is a failure with the goal of seeing as little of it as possible. "World's best airports" is like ranking "World's best cancers".
