Trying to figure that out, I have no idea about the place.

Going with my girl who's been to Cancun twice and wouldn't mind going again for part of the trip. Although I have an image in my mind of there swarming with tourists, I wouldn't mind checking it out. Said she heard Tulum is good also, Riviera Maya, Acapulco. Would also like to see what's there to see in Mexico City, historical sites and such.
If you go to DF, I recommend staying in Coyoacán or Condesa. Both neighborhoods are close to cool things to see life museums and galleries and have a lot of good local night life. The zocalo and the museum of anthropology are definitely must sees. In both areas there are tons of smaller galleries, shops and historical sights.

Oh right, you lived in Mexico for some time? Thanks.

Can't wrong with any of those tbh id say go cancun, then head to cozumel if you into quieter places. Tulum is also close by and you can check out cenotes.

Distrito federal is also worthwhile imo cabo area has some amazing beaches too. In short, you can't go wrong with Mexico, amazing people, amazing food, and just such a beautiful diverse landscape.
