Anyone have to regularly give presentations as part of their job? How do you feel about them? Is it something that became easier to do the more you did it?

Looking into data science and it seems like a large portion of it is giving presentations, something I've never particularly excelled at.

Practice a lot and i mean a lot, and it does get better, but if you are really bad with public speaking the first couple of times take some beta blockers

Most people don't like public speaking. Unless how good you are up there is actually crucial then they probably aren't judging you on that in a work related situation, just on the information you are conveying.

Know talking points and practice expanding on them but never memorize lines. Practice in front of people you feel comfortable with or in the location you might know you are giving it if you can.

oh and like X said Beta blockers

Doesn't fog your mind but stops any physical symptoms of being nervous trembling, misspeaking etc.

I think it's a very individual thing. For me speaking, I have to give lots of presentations about my projects in traffic planning/engineering. When I had my first presentations I used to be nervous before and I took a lot of time to prepare myself. Meanwhile I fall asleep everytime I want to practice my presentation for the first time when I'm on my way to the meeting/event. So I will end up there with the graphic material and for the rest I speak off the cuff. I think for the audience or the participators of the meetings presentations like these are more exciting and entertaining. Because for me it's also hard to stay awake during most presentations and I appreciate lively presentations.

So I think to get this confidence it needs two things:
1. you have to be well up in your topic.
2. experience and practice and this needs some time.

I do. In part, you have to like it a little... or grow to like it. But if you're an introvert, don't worry. You'd be surprised how many great speakers there are who are introverts. (They tend to plan and prep the hell out of it, which is always a good thing.)

It does become easier the more you do it and the more experience you get. I kind of encourage it now.

It also helps to get a coach if you can (i.e., especially if an employer can help pay for it!). My wife is excellent at that. She learns their presentation material so that it's relevant and engaging to the designed audience, helps them focus on what to say, helps them work on all the body gestures and habits to help open people up, and she also video records them so that you can witness with the coach where you need work to improve. Things like "ums" and "uhs" or not pausing or talking too fast or looking too stiff and not moving or not modulating your voice any are common issues.

I hated presentations so much that I dropped my average grade by a looot. I rejected doing any. And I hate it to that level that I almost quit uni after passing all exams simply because they changed the law so we had to do the presentation for the final paper.

Love presentations. Thank God we were forced to learn public speaking in Uni.

Had to give speeches in the middle of the hall with random people walking around. It was priceless.

Just relax, most people aren't good public speakers anyway. Practising a lot before your presentation will help you feel more confident.

Never had a problem with 'em really.. but it becomes easier and I believe people get better at it with "practice".

Funny how my mother continues to try to get me jobs now that I'm self employed.

Right now she's trying to get me to send my CV to a large petroleum company who pays really well. It's kinda tempting but I must resist.
