Personally I can't stand "canned laughter", although I read something along these lines a while back that explains why a few of these shows (not so many now, excepting garbage tv sitcoms like
Miranda) still use it:

Thinking of other light-hearted British comedies like
Only Fools And Horse or
The Vicar Of Dibley there is a genuine audience response, sometimes you can hear people being hushed from laughing too much.
Mrs Brown's Boys deliberately picks people who obviously find the show hilarious, you can hear them crying with laughter, which I suppose is why it transfers well to a live show.
