I'm not aware of it having nationalist roots. I think the nationalist link has only come recently.

It's also worth noting that the kilt is very much a highland thing. It is only relatively recently than it has become more widespread across the whole country.

Traditional kilts are great big things that are pretty heavy and would be a nightmare in the wet.
