Not really, but these days it's more about being likable and meeting people than it is about knowing a lot and being able to do a job (that's part of it as well, but more emphasis seems to be one personality). With computers and technology employers want people who will add to a team and be self-motivated rather than paper pushers that clock in and clock out.

@Gordon Bombay I'm applying for analysts/associates in business consulting firms (management consulting etc), I've graduated in Dec but only seriously applied since Feb (took a half month break in March). I realize that's a lot less than what other people have to go through (how long does it usually take anyway?) but it gets very frustrating not to be even called for an interview. My mates who have contacts get called and they did business (even if from less reputable uni), it sucks none of my parents know anyone in consulting too

It's also about team fit, which you cannot get from a uni degree. Knowing that you can do the work is only part of the puzzle. The other questions are "Will they do the work?" (i.e., will they be career motivated to excel in it) and "Will they fit the culture of the team?"
Which is why who you know becomes very important, as those relationships are often gates for these other questions.
