I was sorta going to say something very similar. Le Pen doesn't actually have a leg to stand on vs the national team, because the French team never achieved anything remotely similar to what the beautiful Desailly, Thuram, Lizarazu (comes from Basque territory), Djorkaeff (Armenian roots), Deschamps (Basque), Zidane, Karembeu, Henry did in 98 and then 2000. By contrast, Guivarc'h and Dugarry were utterly useless. :D Out of the "ethnic" Frenchmen who were integral in 98 there was Blanc, Barthez and Petit.
Of course but there was also deschamps:D. but your point is well made nontheless.
I would also say that france colonialisation put the french team ahead of its time with naturalised players the first was in 1931. Now we can see that strongly nationalistic teams suh as Italy are strating to come through more and more with foriengers, camo is an example but more interesting is the case of balotelli, who brings a whole new dimension to what it means to be a nationality, is it really as simple as a passport? Same goes for Amauri. So in many ways the French case superseeds well ahead of its time.

Descamps, like Liza, is from Basque territory. Lizarazu in fact had some grief from the Basque separatists while he was at Bayern because he refused to get involved in the politics. They obviously thought he should be humming their tune. Zidane of course also famous for refusing to touch politics despite so many people hoping he would.

Well the French historically owe much to their players of immigrant roots. Kopa had Polish roots, Platini (Italian), Tigana (Malian), Luis Fernandez (Spanish), Fontaine (French Moroccan). That doesn't mean these guys weren't French, this is the way modern society functions, and Le Pen and people like him are just stuck in ancient times when you could determine nationality by skin, not documents.

See, it's a lot more fun to write essays here than it is at school innit

so in the end it comes down to peoples philosophies, even so it's only a minority who are objectors to the current makeup of the N.T

indeed, school can be one of the most unimaginative and uninspiring places. here I can ride my purple giraffe across the rainbow:D
