But on the other hand I'm sure Mick Jagger and Richards needed the money much more than a band who had just released their debut. ( I think it's their debut, can't fact-check because Wiki is down :D )
It wasn't and it wasn't their song to use. I have no issue with people using samples - as long at the writter is given what they are owed...they wrote it. Also the stones are only getting royalties, they aren't getting all of the money, the song has enough differences for it not to be given completely to the stones - also iirc it was a brian jones song so the money will be going to his estate, which i believe goes to charity.

How on earth would the Verve know about that song? It wasn't recorded! Even if their parents had dragged them to the gig where it was played - how would they be supposed to remember it 20 years later? It makes absolutely no sense.

Pardon - This is the performance by the orchestra (which was recorded)

When is this recorded?

This is the stones performing the same song (which was recorded)

I don't understand your point.
They weren't guilty of ripping off the song, they were guilty of ripping of the orchestral parts. And if we want to get really down to business, the Stones ripped off Staple Singers, a 50's band. Even the intro of Bittersweet Symphony is original, they just sampled a part of the orchestral sound which was 1 tone too long, iirc.
